While our area lakes and streams are pretty healthy, some areas in and around the country are experiencing problems. This issue of Fish News from NOAA highlights some serious fishery problems on the West Coast and East Coast along with some restoration work elsewhere. Thought our avid fishermen and naturalists would find this interesting.  Some real challenges.

Speaking of fish… Fisheries biologists recently conducted the annual survey of the Savage River tailwater trout fishery with assistance from the department’s Hatcheries Division, Maryland Forest Service, Maryland Biological Stream Survey and Wildlife and Heritage Service. Native brook trout, wild brown trout, and a few rainbow trout inhabit the river. For this and more information on fishing in the area, including what’s going on with lake fishing, check out the DNR Maryland Fishing Report.

Cooling temperatures, colorful foliage and unpredictable wildlife – all signs that the fall season is upon us! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is urging motorists to be alert for animals, especially deer, foraging for food and looking for mates. I have already noticed more or the furry ones along the road in the past week or so and the rainy weather with reduced visibility doesn’t help. Please be careful.

U.S. Cellular Wants to Sponsor Your Youth Organization

Starting today, youth organizations in local communities can earn up to $1,000 through U.S. Cellular’s Community Connections program. Now in its fourth year, Community Connections provides sponsorship support to help youth groups pay for uniforms, equipment, travel and other group expenses. Since the program launched in 2015, U.S. Cellular has awarded $1.3 million to more than 2,800 groups, including sports teams, STEM programs, marching bands and dance squads.

Academic and athletic groups representing kids and teens up to 12th grade can sign up now at www.uscellular.com/communityconnections to become eligible to receive sponsorship funds. Once signed up, groups then need to rally their friends, families and supporters to complete online activities that earn money for the needs of their group.

“We know that there several organizations and clubs that provide meaningful experiences for our youth every day, and Community Connections is one way that we can support them to achieve their goals,” said Teresa Amick, area sales manager at U.S. Cellular. “As we enter the fourth year of this program, we realize that it is all about helping our communities connect to the good in all of us, and we encourage local youth leaders to visit the website and see how easy it is to earn money for their group.”

Once an interested group signs up, they have ten days to generate support and complete online activities that include following U.S. Cellular on its social channels, watching a video or answering a short survey. The money goes directly to the organization, and each group can earn up to $1,000.

U.S. Cellular has a longstanding commitment to the community and education. The company has contributed more than $10.65 million to K-12 education since 2009. In 2017, U.S. Cellular associates volunteered at more than 185 events and have committed to volunteering 35,000 hours in local communities again this year.

BOE Seeking Public Comment on RISE Strategic Plan

The Garrett County Board of Education (BOE), at its September 11, 2018, meeting, discussed possible scenarios regarding school configuration options as part of the RISE Strategic Plan.

After an examination of the strategic issues and the overarching goals and values of the Board of Education, the following options have been identified as a next step in the strategic process.
Those options are:
  • Option A: Revise the current grade band arrangement in most schools to two grade bands – PreKindergarten-6 and 7-12.
  • Option B: Revise the current grade band arrangement in most schools to three grade bands – PreKindergarten-2, 3-6, and 7-12.
  • Option C: Make no changes to grade band alignment – Three grade bands (PreKindergarten-5, 6-8, and 9-12).
  • Option Alternate 1: Create regional grade bands based on enrollment and capacity.
  • Option Alternate 2: Create a consolidated, comprehensive high school.
Each subcommittee (Educational Services and Administrative Services) will analyze each of the grade band options to identify the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities and will prepare a list of advantages, challenges, and barriers to each, and will also identify other potential considerations of each grade band alignment.
The Board is seeking feedback from the public on the proposed three grade band alignment options and the alternate options. You may submit your comments by noon on Friday, October 5, 2018, to the Public Information Office at public.info@garrettcountyschools.org or in writing to:
Garrett County Public Schools
c/o Public Information Office
40 S. Second Street
Oakland, MD 21550
There will be other opportunities for the public to provide input into the RISE plan throughout the strategic planning process. The Board will then review all comments and discuss the options at each of the remaining stages of plan development.

45th Antiques, Makers and Collectibles Show – Civic Club Café and Bake Sale

Things certainly have come a long way in 45 years. What started as a small show in the B&O train station in 1973, the Civic Club’s annual Antique Show has made some changes this year to adapt to the changing times. While antiques are still the major attraction of the show, new this year will be Makers of new items that have a root in tradition.

“We have found a small group of makers who will be joining us this year; a basket maker, a blacksmith, furniture maker and metalsmith, among others”, explains Jean Tumbarello, Vendor coordinator and President of the Civic Club. “Over the past few years, some of our long-time antique vendors have stopped doing the show for a number of reasons. We knew it was a good time to expand our focus to attract a new and younger shopper to the show. Not everyone gets excited about antiques but they appreciate the quality of well made, timeless craftsmanship”.

The show is always held over Autumn Glory weekend to take advantage of the large crowds of people in the county. Last year some 1700 people passed through the armory doors to shop and eat some of the good food offered at the Civic Club Café. There is an admission fee of $3 per person because the show is a fundraiser for the Civic Club. “All the proceeds from this weekend go back to the community. This year we donated $12,000 back to non-profits within the Garrett County community – all from money we made at last year’s show”, said Tumbarello. “The three-dollar fee is good for the entire weekend. If you come on Friday, save your ticket and you can come back Saturday and Sunday without paying again. Many people will come on Friday to check out what the vendors are offering for sale and come back on Sunday to see if it is still available. Of course, you run the risk of it not being there, so if you see something you really want, it is best to buy it right away to avoid disappointment later.”

Another reason to visit the Armory during Autumn Glory weekend is the Civic Club Café. Most of the food is homemade; the recipe for the Vegetable Beef soup is about as old as the show itself and it is known county wide as being simply delicious. The chicken and dumpling soup, introduced two years ago, is also a favorite. It is made from a family recipe of Judi Merriman – the club’s First Vice President and café coordinator. New this year will be ‘walking tacos’ – tacos you can eat from a bag of Fritos!

“We pride ourselves on serving fresh food that is made with love and quality ingredients,” says Judi. “It takes a lot of team work to pull an event like this off. Club members volunteer time all weekend in the kitchen – even husbands and visiting family will come and help.”

In addition to the food, the café also offers home baked goodies – cookies, pies, cakes, buckeyes, brownies and quick breads – for sale at reasonable prices. Hot coffee is always available. The café is open during show hours.

In addition to the antique show, the club offers a chance to win a $1000 cash prize through raffle ticket sales. Tickets will be available at the event all weekend and the drawing will take place at 3pm on Autumn Glory Sunday. Winner does not need to be present to win.

Hours for the Antiques and Makers fair are Autumn Glory Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm. We hope to see you there!

Clean air means a clean lake! Unfortunately, on Friday, the EPA signed a final agency decision denying Maryland’s petition for relief asking out-of-state power plants to run their already installed pollution control equipment in order to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to ground-level ozone problems downwind in Maryland.

S.T.E.A.M. Kids is being held at the Oakland Branch of the Ruth Enlow Library this afternoon from 2:00pm – 3:30pm.

They will be hosting Ruth Toomey, Executive Director of the Maryland Tourism Coalition (MTC). This event is free but there is limited seating and registration is required.

The Deep Creek Lake Lion’s Club fifth annual “Bark in the Park” 5k race will take place on Saturday September 22nd at 8:00am to benefit their off-leash dog park. It’s an off-road (headphones OK), pet friendly race that will start and end from their park on Bumble Bee Road.
