A new marathoning World Record was set by a Garrett County native

A new marathoning World Record was set by a Garrett County native on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai on January 18, 2018 when he became the first and only person to ever run public marathons (26.2 miles) on all 7 Continents and in all 50 United States in less than 1 year.  However, he set an even larger record a few days later on January 23 in Auckland, New Zealand when he added the earth’s “8th Continent”, Zealandia, to his list of conquests.  Earlier this year, Dave Jones, formerly of Oakland, MD and now living in Hanson, KY, became 1 of only 4 people to ever run official, public marathons on all 7 of the Earth’s “traditional” Continents in less than 7 Days.  Starting at the Australia Day Marathon in Perth, Australia on January 25, 2017 and finishing just under 167 hours later in the White Continent Marathon on King George Island, Antarctica, he completed full marathons on each Continent, traveling from East to West in order to begin races at each official Start Line in its own time zone and finish under the published race cut-offs before traveling to the next race. But, approximately 2 weeks after returning home from that adventure, professional journal articles began to surface that posited the existence of an 8th Continent.  “Zealandia”, which is 94% submerged in the Pacific, has limited dry land consisting mostly of New Zealand and New Caledonia (for more info on the 8th continent see: https://www.livescience.com/57927-new-zealand-part-of-eighth-continent.html).
In a last-minute decision, Dave dropped everything and flew from his World Record celebration in Hawaii to Auckland, and ran a marathon on the Earth’s ‘Hidden 8th Continent’ on day #364 of this record-breaking year.  That race further secured his spot in history by making him the first and only person to ever complete full, public marathons on all of the Earth’s 8 continents AND in all 50 US States in less than 365 Days.  He said afterward, “Now that I’ve proven that a jumbo-sized former smoker with essentially no athletic talent can do this, I invite others to disregard their own limits and complete ‘The Eternal Endurance Challenge’ too.”  Right now, this is a club of 1 finisher, but Dave knows others can do it and has vowed to, “…give as much guidance and advice as I can to help anyone who is interested to achieve this too.  It can be done!”.  “There are very few things in this world that have never been done before, when I discovered that I was in a position to accomplish one of them, reason went out the window and I had to try!”
Dave will be returning home to Garrett County later this month to speak about his adventures and lessons learned through them at a public event in the Garrett College Auditorium in McHenry.  This event, on February 27 at 6:30 pm, is part of “The Colloquium Series” hosted by Garrett’s Adventure Sports Institute.  More information about the Colloquia can be found by contacting Mike Logsdon at Garrett College.  This live engagement will be recorded and portions of it will be used in an upcoming documentary about Dave that will be released later this Spring.
Jones is the grandson of Oakland resident Joyce Skidmore, and the son of former Garrett County Economic Development Director, Tom Jones (deceased) and Alana Jones, both formerly of Oakland.  He is married with 3 children, ages 12, 8, and 4 and owns a company called Eternal Endurance where he works as a Keynote and Motivational Speaker as well as an Ultra-Endurance Coach.  He is far from a natural or lifelong athlete, and didn’t start running until 5 years ago when he weighed 285 lbs and was trying to break a 25-year nicotine addiction that saw him smoking 2 packs per day.  He still stands over 6’1, has a long beard, shaved head, and weighs 240 lbs., far from a typical world-class endurance athlete type, though he’s finished Ironman triathlons and 100+ mile runs, twice each, among other endurance feats.
Dave’s Eternal Endurance Challenge has been followed by various local, national, and international news organizations, but you can also find more information on the website: www.eternalendurance.com and follow in real-time on the Eternal Endurance page on Facebook where Dave frequently posts.  Updates and pictures can also be found on Twitter @eternalenduranc and Instagram @Eternal Endurance.  Dave is currently writing a book about his adventures and accepting bookings for public appearances in 2018.  His keynote addresses help audiences of all types to transcend their own limits in work, school, relationships, and athletics in order to achieve their most lofty goals and beyond.  Contact info@eternalendurance.com today to inquire about availability and rates for getting Dave to present this life-changing message to your next group gathering.
Jones can be made available for phone, Skype, and in-person interviews by contacting Eternal Endurance at: info@eternalendurance.com.

GRMC Subacute Unit Receives Leadership Excellence Award

The Garrett Regional Medical Center (GRMC)  Subacute Unit was recently recognized by the American College of Health Care Administrators as a recipient of the 2018 Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award.

Approximately 11 percent of skilled nursing facilities nationwide met the qualifications for the award, with 37 Maryland facilities selected among them.  GRMC’s Subacute Unit was the only facility in western Maryland to receive the 2018 Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award.

The award was developed in 2008 using data driven criteria to objectively identify high-performing skilled nursing facilities and the leaders who make them excel.  GRMC’s Subacute Unit is supported by Jim Cuppett, Subacute Administrator, who is a long-time, dedicated employee of Garrett Regional Medical Center.

“Jim has been integral to the Subacute Unit’s sustained success and continued growth, having been here since the unit first opened twenty-years ago,” said Lori Davis, RN, Director of the Subacute Unit.  “His efforts have helped the Subacute Unit achieve national recognition in recent years as one of western Maryland’s top-performing skilled nursing facilities making it the leading choice for patient care in our region.”

Award recipients are identified based upon publicly collected data by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing home facilities.  The award eligibility requirements include an occupancy rate greater than 85 percent and attaining CMS quality measures in the top ten percent nationally within a four-quarter average.

The Subacute Care Unit at Garrett Regional Medical Center was established in 1997 and received a five-star Best Nursing Home ranking  by  US News & World Report four years consecutively.  The ten-bed unit is designed for patients who may not need nursing home care but are not yet ready for discharge from hospital care. Subacute offers patients a variety of rehabilitation services to help them reach their highest level of functioning.  GRMC’s Subacute Unit serves 350-400 patients annually and is supported by a team of 12 employees.

GRMC brands Grantsville Medical Center to reflect medical offerings, quality of care

Garrett Regional Medical Center’s (GRMC) primary and urgent care facility in Grantsville, which opened a year ago and was originally called Grantsville Medical Associates, has been rebranded Grantsville Medical Center to better reflect the growing list of specialty medical services now provided at the facility.

“When we opened our Grantsville location, it was with the express purpose of meeting the primary and urgent care needs of Garrett’s northern communities and the surrounding areas of western Allegany County and Pennsylvania,” says Kendra Thayer, Vice President of Patient Care Services at GRMC. “Once we were established, we really saw the need not only for those services, but for a number of medical specialty services as well. Rather than expecting the Grantsville community to travel for specialty care, we thought it made more sense to bring those additional medical services to our Grantsville location.”

Over the course of the last year, GRMC has brought orthopaedics, obstetrics, and general surgery procedures to its northern Garrett facility. Now, residents of Grantsville and surrounding communities in Pennsylvania and western Allegany County can receive the care they need in one convenient location.

“Prior to a year ago, area residents would have to go out of town for common surgical procedures such as colonoscopy, rotator cuff repair, joint injections or removal of moles, lipoma, and other skin conditions,” notes Daniel J. Crable, M.D., who leads the Grantsville Medical Center and is the center’s Primary Care provider.  “As with our specialty care, our Primary and Urgent Care services offer care to all ages, ranging from pediatric to geriatric patients. That has led us to seeing patient referrals from family members across multiple generations – the community’s trust in our care is very gratifying.”

The center serves a multitude of needs across a broad spectrum of medical services.  Growing families can receive children’s health care services, including child and infant well checks and vaccinations.  Aging adults can seek treatment for common conditions such as arthritis, COPD, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, and general surgical procedures.  Employers can also utilize Grantsville Medical Center for pre-employment screenings, drug-testing, and CDL/DOT physicals.

“GRMC works hard to assess and meet the needs of the people of this region,” says GRMC President and CEO Mark Boucot. “The services we bring to the Grantsville area are representative of the hospital’s mission; we strive to treat every patient like a member of our own family. That includes providing care where people live whenever possible. At Grantsville Medical Center, we’re accomplishing that.”

The Grantsville Medical Center is located in the Northern Garrett Industrial Park, neighboring Total Biz Fulfillment.  The state of the art, 5,500 square foot facility offers exam and procedure rooms with radiography and lab services. Primary and specialty medical services are available by appointment, and continue to accept new patients.  Walk-in patients are welcome at the facility’s Urgent Care, which operates seven days a week.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Showcases World-Class Golf Academy

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort – the acclaimed luxury resort in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania – features an array of exceptional instruction programs and expert club-fitting for the 2018 golf season.

The state-of-the-art Nemacolin Golf Academy offers topnotch instruction led by PGA Professional Eric Johnson, a Golf Digest “Top 100 Teacher.” Highlights at the world-class facility include individual lessons, TrackMan® Golf Radar Solution, SAM Putt Lab, V1 Video System, BodiTracks as well as one-, two- and three-day golf schools.

The Golf Academy additionally offers expert club-fitting for custom-made equipment ideal for everyday golf aficionados and junior players as well as professionals. The latest technology is used to accurately analyze individual swings and build the perfect clubs for consistent, enjoyable golf.

“The Nemacolin Golf Academy is one of the premier locales in the U.S. to improve your game,” says Mike Jones, director of golf and recreation. “Our never-ending goal is to help our members and guests take advantage of the expert teaching and technology we offer and elevate their enjoyment and skill to the next level.”

In addition to the Golf Academy, Nemacolin showcases two extraordinary courses designed by Pete Dye.  Shepherd’s Rock opened last July to rave reviews. The 7,151-yard layout presents golf in a spectacular setting, as the rolling bucolic terrain provided an ideal canvas for Dye and co-designer Tim Liddy. The course offers plenty of challenge and fun for players of all abilities and is a perfect complement to the resort’s lauded Mystic Rock course.

GOLF Magazine named Shepherd’s Rock “Honorable Mention Best New Course You Can Play.” Golfweek tabbed Mystic Rock No. 1 among “Best Courses You Can Play in Pennsylvania,” and Golf Digest ranked Mystic Rock in the top-60 of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.” The resort also received the coveted “Editors’ Choice Award” from Golf Digest in the “Best Golf Resorts in the Americas” category.
