Congrats to Mary Callis and the whole GLAF team. The Ballet Theater of Maryland’s production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow ballet Sunday afternoon was a great success and very well received by all in attendance, especially the little ones.
There was an attempted kidnapping of a five-year-old boy in Cumberland Saturday. The boy is safe and the kidnapper has been apprehended.
Successful Rural Broadband Launch: A Garrett County initiative began ahead of schedule, bringing residents in Garrett County closer to broadband accessibility. This was one of two pilot programs established by the governor Hogan’s June 2017 executive order creating an Office of Rural Broadband to improve connectivity for economic and public safety purposes, with a focus on communities that have largely been ignored.
The Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack is searching for the owner of construction equipment items that were found on Friendsville Road (MD Route 42) between Friendsville and McHenry, during the week of 10/23/2017. Anyone that has lost construction equipment during this time frame is asked to call the MSP McHenry Barrack at 301-387-1101.

I had a very interesting meeting Friday as part of The Greater Cumberland Committee Education Work Group. We had an interesting discussion led by Dr. Diane Romaine of Frostburg about prescription drug abuse issues and what is being done in the medical community to combat this epidemic. This is a huge problem even for rural, peaceful Garrett County.
The 2017 Wild Turkey Observation Survey Summary shows turkey reproduction in western Maryland was slightly below average, but high enough to maintain the population at previous levels. The Fall Turkey hunting season begins October 28th and ends November 4th.
On the other end of the spectrum, a Care2 Petition with over 119,000 signatures is seeking to put an end to Maryland’s black bear trophy hunt, which ran through Thursday in Garrett, Frederick, Washington, and Allegany Counties.
The Ruth Enlow Library and Garrett County Family Support Services will co-host a teen sensory and social event on Saturday, November 4, 10:00am – 11:00am, at the Oakland Library. This interactive, sensory friendly program will include activities specifically designed for teens that provide adaptive experiences based on multiple learning styles.
Garrett County is featured for “Building a Culture of Health in Appalachia” in the October edition of ARC in Focus as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation award recipient.

Garrett County may be in Appalachia, and may even share some of the problems, but we truly have it good compared to some other Appalachian communities, especially relative to medical services and mental health care access.
The Maryland State Department of Health just reported the number of drug and alcohol-related overdose deaths by county for the second quarter of 2017. Garrett County has had 2 opioid deaths in the past 12 months.
On Saturday, October 28th, the 1994 Laker men’s basketball team, which won Garrett College’s first state and Region XX championships, along with three former athletes and a coach will be inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame. There are other activities planned as well for the Hall of Fame weekend.

Well, the four-day long Maryland bear hunting season started yesterday and a number of bears have already been harvested. The Maryland Department of natural Resources also cautions that this is the time of year when black bears are most active as they seek calories for their winter hibernation. Please be careful and follow the DNR’s tips.
Mary Callis of the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) says there are still some tickets left for Sunday’s performance of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow with the Ballet Theater of Maryland. The event is this Sunday, starting at 2:00pm at the Garrett College Auditorium.

Friendsville Library Quilters raised $4,120 in the raffle for their outstanding quilt this year – “Wildflowers of Garrett County – A Community Quilt!” The winning ticket is Karen Mager! Proceeds from this raffle benefit the Friendsville Branch of the Ruth Enlow Library.

A great time had by all at Commissioner Paul Edwards’ fundraiser Sunday afternoon: good music, conversation and food, and nice to support a great fellow working tirelessly to help our County. It was also good to see a number of attendees present that “crossed the aisle” to support Paul.
We all know Garrett County is a great place and that we all have reason to be optimistic, but it looks like the rest of the country is catching up. The just released University of Maryland Consumer Confidence Index shows a surge in consumer confidence from a year earlier.

The Arthurdale Heritage Craft Show and Fall festival is this Saturday. Arthurdale is a historic village built as part of the New Deal program and was a pet project of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

There were two recent “anniversaries” of events that impacted us all in Garrett County: Wednesday marked the 45th anniversary of passage of the U.S. Clean Water Act. This major legislation was created to protect and restore our nation’s waterways from pollution and decline. Also, yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the Black Monday stock market crash, now a distant memory.

State health officials announced Thursday they’ve confirmed the first three cases of seasonal flu of the 2017-18 flu season. The laboratory-confirmed cases were diagnosed in three Baltimore-area adults. One was briefly hospitalized. The flu strain in all three cases was type A (H3).
Here’s something different: Backbone Tavern is hosting Art Music Fusion with Nathan Shaffer and Rob Lightner on Wednesday evening, October 25th starting at 6:00pm. The $45 fee includes wine, painting supplies and live acoustic music.
The Cornucopia Cafe is collecting Box Tops on behalf of Grantsville Elementary School. The Mountain Fresh Farmers Market will be open this Wednesday and Saturday and does not close until October 28th. Some Winter dates are also planned. Wednesday’s market opens at 10:00am and goes until 1:00pm.
The Master Gardeners, under the direction of Ashley Bodkins, University of Maryland Extension, have been answering questions at the Market each month this year. Eat your veggies! We have great restaurants offering a variety of dishes here in Garrett County, including Vegan and Vegetarian fare. With 8 million Americans either Vegan or Vegetarian, we know some of our readers are as well. Travel site WalletHub just announced the results of their “Best Cities for Vegans Study” and New York, Portland and Orlando came in first through third, respectively. The study also has some related interesting facts.
Engage Mountain Maryland launched the You+2 Initiative yesterday in Garrett County. The intiative asks residents to pledge to vote in the 2018 midterm election and also challenge two more people to do the same. The goal of this is to achieve the greatest per capita voter turnout in the country.
Congratulations to George Kullgren from Westminster, Maryland. George supported the Garrett County Arts Council by purchasing chances on the raffle quilt and was the lucky winner, as drawn and announced at the Heritage Craft Fest.
Famous painter Thomas Kinkade’s brother, Patrick, visited Oakland over the weekend and had this to say:

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources yesterday reported that the 2017 young-of-year striped bass survey in the Chesapeake Bay shows the fish is reproducing in strong numbers. The annual survey’s index is 13.2, above the 64-year average of 11.7. Rockfish, as they are commonly known, are an important sport and commercial fishery and this is good news for the state and region.

So the weather forecast was off a bit for the weekend … it turned out sunnier and warmer than we anticipated but we will take it! Today will be cooler with showers this morning and then partly cloudy this afternoon. Highs only reaching the upper 40s.
We hope everyone had a great Autumn Glory weekend! From the feedback received from friends and family, and our own experiences out and about, it looks like it was another successful event.

While the Governor was in Garrett County, Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford lead a trade and diplomatic mission to Europe that kicked-off Friday with stops in France, Belgium, and Estonia. In addition to trade-related topics, the Maryland delegation will also be learning about cybersecurity and drug and opioid abuse efforts in Europe.
The movie Iron Jawed Angels tells the true story of how brilliant young activists took the women’s suffrage movement by storm and helped American women gain the right to vote. The movie, sponsored by the newly formed Garrett College chapter of American Association of University Women, is free and open to the public. It will be shown at 3:00pm and 6:00pm on October 18th in the Garrett College auditorium.
Sheriff Rob Corley has announced that the month of November will be designated as No Shave November for the employees at the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office to raise funds for the Garrett County “Police Providing Presents Christmas Project”.
October 22-28 is Maryland Economic Development Week. The MEDA Economic Fall Conference will be held on October 23 at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum, and will feature opportunities and benefits related to Maryland’s 12 military bases. While many innovations take place “on base,” every community can identify opportunities to acquire these advancements and turn them into commercial applications for local companies.

The 50th annual Autumn Glory Grand Feature Parade will be in Downtown Oakland starting at 1:00pm on Saturday. Be sure to get there early as there will be street closures and lots of people and traffic.
Governor Hogan will be coming out to Western Maryland to ride in the Autumn Glory parade and visit several sites throughout Garrett and Allegany counties.
The Autumn Glory Festival Car Show Mountain Top Cruisers, the biggest car show in Garrett County, will be in Oakland from 9:00am-3:00pm on Sunday.

A Bear in a Bikini? That’s what the Friends of Deep Creek Lake have planned for their Autumn Glory Parade float. Actually, it is not uncommon to see a bear swimming in the lake this time of year. The next DCL Policy and Review Board meeting is scheduled for October 23, 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Discovery Center.

The first segment of Maryland’s muzzleloader deer season opens statewide October 19th. This is one of several deer hunting opportunities offered in the state and typically coincides with pleasant fall weather. The early muzzleloader season runs from Oct. 19-21 in Deer Management Regions A and B, which includes Garrett County.
The Ruth Enlow library will be participating in the third annual Maryland S.T.E.M. Festival with official events scheduled at the Friendsville, Grantsville, Kitzmiller, and Oakland locations in early November.
