A little foggy this morning turning into partly sunny with a slight chance of showers this afternoon. Highs in the low 70s.

Did anyone else see the pinkish glow of the sunrise through the fog this morning? I didn’t quite catch the experience on camera but it was pretty cool … don’t forget to send us your sunrise, fall foliage and beautiful Deep Creek Lake area photos to feature in our gallery next month.

October has been designated as I Can Swim! month by the Garrett County Commissioners. I Can Swim! is a free water safety and swim instruction program in partnership with the Garrett College Community Aquatic Recreation Complex, the Garrett County Board of Education, the Garrett College Foundation and the County.

Smoke N Mirrors Gallery will be hosting a live model drawing session this evening at their downtown Oakland studio from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. This is a mature modeling session that requires preregistration and a $15 fee. 

L.A.F.F. DINNER is today at 6:00PM. Shepherd of the Hills is sponsoring a gathering for food and fellowship at Deep Creek Seafood. Dutch treat. Invite friends and neighbors. (L.A.F.F.= Life After Forty Five, but all ages are invited) 

Did you know that more people – 145 million-  participate in outdoor recreation each year than attend an NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL games combined!  A recent report also indicates that people are spending much more on “experiences” and that crowdfunding has enabled more new products geared to the outdoor market than ever.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently welcomed 35 new young adult members into the Maryland Conservation Corps. The class will start will begin work immediately treating hemlock trees in Savage State Forest for the hemlock wooly adelgid, a destructive invasive insect.

Gobble Gobble.  Autumn Glory is almost upon us. In addition to many festivities, the first annual Turkey Trail is alive and well (except for the turkeys that is). The dinners are a tradition dating back decades.


More than three million women in the United States are in treatment or have completed treatment for breast cancer and 1 in 8 American women will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Learn more about the disease.
