Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Scheduled workshops are February 2 & 23, April 6 & 20, June 1 & 15, August 3 & 10, and October 5 & 19. All sessions begin at 1:00 PM for approximately three hours each at Community Action's Oakland offices, led by Nick Fratz-Orr of Railey Realty, Amanda Lewis of Healy Insurance Group, and April Jones of First United Bank & Trust. Attendance at both classes is required to earn HUD-approved Home Buyer Certification, which qualifies the prospective buyer for Garrett County government's Pathway to Homeownership grant for up to $6,875 toward down-payment or closing costs, valid for 5 years. The Garrett County Health Department will be hosting a mobile health insurance clinic on the first Thursday of each month from 1:30-4:30 pm at the Friendsville Library. A representative will be available for in-person assistance to apply for health insurance through Maryland Health Connection.

Our adult book club group in Kitzmiller meets on the second Monday of each month from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Please join us for a great discussion on the book club selection of the month. Create your own world.  Join the Creative Writers Group presented by the Grantsville Library every second Monday of the month from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All are welcome. Attendees will hear in-progress work read by area writers and are invited to bring their own work for constructive comments and gentle criticism. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Hosts Series of Free Canning Workshops “Jams and Jellies” recipes will be featured Saturday, June 27, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, in the first of four canning workshops in the commercial kitchen at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 6 South Second Street, Oakland, Maryland. The first 15 people to sign up for this first event, which is free, will be given a new 38th edition of the Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving, with over 500 recipes. Dr. Shauna Henley, Family and Consumer Science Senior Agent with the University of MD Cooperative Extension Office, will teach participants how to safely and economically preserve locally grown produce. The Silent Book Club of Oakland, brought to you in partnership with the Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library, is definitely what the doctor ordered! Choose anything to read that appeals to you, then discuss with friends old and new! The Silent Book Club meets on the third Sunday of every month at the Green Room Lounge (119 S. Staff can also provide a referral to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their home or who may be facing transportation challenges. These locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Customers can look for the file box labeled “DSS FORMS” to pick up forms, information, or a pre-paid envelope in which to return completed forms to our office for processing.
