Southern High School's Student Council will be hosting a summer blood drive at the American Legion in Oakland on July 10th, from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM. The student council was able to bring in 110 units of blood this past school year, which not only saved numerous lives but also awarded the school a scholarship in the amount of $1500 to give to deserving seniors. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Hosts Series of Free Canning Workshops “Jams and Jellies” recipes will be featured Saturday, June 27, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, in the first of four canning workshops in the commercial kitchen at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 6 South Second Street, Oakland, Maryland. The first 15 people to sign up for this first event, which is free, will be given a new 38th edition of the Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving, with over 500 recipes. Dr. Shauna Henley, Family and Consumer Science Senior Agent with the University of MD Cooperative Extension Office, will teach participants how to safely and economically preserve locally grown produce.
