Maryland Department of Natural Resources crews stocked 600 rainbow trout yesterday in the Youghiogheny River at Friendsville.
AccuWeather offers a Halloween forecast to avoid being caught off-guard when the weather quickly changes while out Trick-or-Treating.
Maryland’s 16th annual black bear hunt has just ended. The largest bear taken weighed 539 pounds and was harvested in Garrett County by Carl Lee of Swanton. Another notable bear included a 529-pound bear, also taken in Garrett County, by Tyler Minnick of Grantsville.
The farmer’s market of the 2019 Summer Season will be today Wednesday, Oct 30th. The Winter Markets will be held indoors on select Saturdays at the Senior Center Building in Oakland.
The Washington Post published a story, stating the Maryland Department of the Environment is looking into a “seep from a riverbank at the Verso paper mill. The substance is leaking into the Potomac River. Verso is working to identify the substance and its origin”. An MDE spokesman says the riverbank is on the West Virginia side … near a tank that was used to store black liquor…

The MD DNR just updated that the following fish have been stocked — the map has more details.

We have seen social media rumblings that the Rock Maze trail is now “gone” – we have a message into the Swallow Falls staff to get the full details.
Plan on the 2019 People’s Choice reception event on Wednesday evening … free food and a good time to celebrate the local “favorites”.
The Daily American reports that Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn has reached out by letter to his counterpart in Pennsylvania, Leslie Richards, and proposed the states join together to apply for federal funds to finish the last 8 miles of Route 219. The project would connect the four-lane highway in Meyersdale to Interstate 68 in Garrett County, Maryland.

The weather for the weekend will be a mixed bag: Friday will be partly sunny, with a high near 58 and a light west wind. Saturday will be cooler, windy and with rain likely, especially after 2:00 pm. What are the safest cities in Maryland you ask? Well here’s a link to a recent report. Frostburg came in at number four. I am sure some of Garrett County’s cities and towns would be listed, but I am guessing they were too small.

The weather for today will be sunny, with a high near 62 and a low of 40. There will be a light southwest wind of six to eight mph. Should be a pleasant day.
Even with this nice fall weather, we all know that winter is just around the corner. And, while snow is definitely beautiful here on the mountain, and a boost to the local economy, winter weather can be trying at times, as this snowy gentleman might attest. I say go with the flow and “bring it on.”

Speaking of the weather, Garrett College has an interesting continuing education class, “Understanding Weather and Climate”, with instructor Joe Bastardi, coming along on November 6th and 13th (two sessions) in McHenry from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Even with fall fully under way, there is some very good fishing to be had on the lake. The Maryland Fishing Report says “most of the floating docks (at the lake) have been pulled so largemouth and smallmouth bass will be on the prowl for any type of cover. Sunken wood, rocks, fallen tree tops and grass lines are good places to look. Casting small crankbaits and jigs that resemble crayfish are a very good tactic. Crayfish are migrating from shallow cover to deeper cover and so have to cross open bottom, smallmouth bass in particular will be waiting in these transition areas to pick them off. Northern pike can be found along grass lines and cove mouths.”
Finally today, in keeping with our “seasonal” theme, orders are being accepted for the spring 2020 planting season for shrubs and trees from the John S. Ayton State Tree Nursery, managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Supplies are limited, so place your order soon (minimum 25 seedlings).

The second to last Wednesday Mountain Fresh Farmers Market is today in Oakland. Many of the farmers have had frost, but there are still greens and tomatoes from vendors with high tunnels, and potatoes, sweet potatoes and other “from the ground” vegetables as well as other storage items such as winter squash, garlic, beets, carrots, and more.
It’s Team Trivia Night at the Greene Turtle this evening from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Fun times and a chance to win nice prizes.

SAMMY’S LIFE STORY JUST GOT A LOT HAPPIER!
There are so many cats at the Garrett County Animal Shelter, many who come in as strays and are not claimed by an owner. We work closely with the staff there to see that every adoptable cat has a chance of being adopted. It’s the basis of our mission. Sammy was once such cat who was not well socialized with people or other animals when she came to us. We worked lovingly and tirelessly with her to get her where she needed to be. Sammy wasn’t with us for too long when a young couple came in and fell in love with this beautiful girl. Sammy, being the now well-socialized cat she had become, won the young couples hearts. They wanted to adopted right away and add another fur baby to their home. Our staff in the Adoption Wing worked like the well-integrated team they are to get Sammy ready. Other staff members answered all of the couple’s questions about Sammy and what she needed from them at home. Soon, the three of them were on their way to their happily ever after.

Well, yesterday started out really foggy in most places, but the fog burned off and it was a decent day. Today’s weather will include showers, mainly after 8:00 am. High near 58 with a low in the evening of 39. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
When I first saw this photo taken by Maura Sacco, I did a double take. It appeared that there was an owl in the tree, but it really is just the tree. A bit of an optical illusion.Thanks Maura.

Congratulations are in order as the Garrett College cross country team took home the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference team title last week. The newly reinstated program had three finishers in the top five. Way to go gentlemen.
Speaking of the college, Annie Simcoe, a very talented paper artist working and living in Western Maryland, and also an avid mountain biker, runner and kayaker, will will presenting her story at the Adventure Sports Colloquium speaker series this evening at 6:30 pm in the CAOS building room # 1013.
Tonight is Ladies Night at Sipside Lounge in Oakland. They have 25% off glasses of wine and bottomless chocolate.

Fall at the lake
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a FROG! This is a real frog on the window glass the other day at the college in McHenry. While the photo gives the illusion of size and height (and its ability to leap tall buildings…) s/he is just a regular-size amphibian. To my knowledge, there are no giant mutant frogs invading the lake. But, you never know… Be on the look-out!

Coming back down to earth: The Appalachian Laboratory is hosting a Lab After Hours- a Guided Tour as part of the Watershed Moments Community Learning Series on November 7th, They will be hosting guided tours of the Laboratory from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm that evening. During the tour, participants will be able to visit laboratories and learn about the research conducted there from the scientists and students who work in those facilities. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is free, but registration is required. There’s a Young Artists Workshop this evening at the Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland. This looks like it is both informative and fun. Find out more here. While society increasingly puts emphasis on STEM education, and for a lot of good reasons, I believe in STEAM education, adding arts makes for a well-rounded individual. Just a little editorial.
Finally, Sarah and I have been very busy preparing for our 2019 Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Challenge celebration party (and related program guide, etc.). The celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 30th from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm in the GIEC on the Garrett College campus in McHenry. Fall means cool weather and colorful foliage. It can also mean unpredictable wildlife. Deer mating season is right around the corner, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources urges motorists to stay alert for deer and other wildlife as these animals seek food supplies and mates before winter.
“Deer greatly increase their movements during the breeding season from mid-October through November as they search for mates,” Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. “Motorists should be especially cautious from dusk to dawn when deer are most active and likely to be encountered on the road.”
Motorists are reminded to:
- Be particularly attentive in the early morning and evening periods.
- Gradually brake to avoid hitting a deer; do not swerve as this may cause you to lose control of a vehicle.
- Slow down if a deer crosses the road ahead. Deer often travel in groups and others may be nearby.
- Stay alert and slow down in areas where deer crossing signs are posted. These indicate locations of frequent deer activity.
- Watch the shoulder. Be alert for deer standing along the shoulder as they may suddenly move into the roadway. Slow down and sound your horn to scare them away.

On Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Garrett County Health Department, local law enforcement and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 18th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
Bring your pills for disposal to any of the three local drug take back sites in Garrett County: Oakland City Hall; Maryland State Police Barrack in McHenry; or Garrett County Sheriff’s Office. To help combat the continued vaping health crisis, DEA has approved the collection of vaping pens and cartridges at the National Take Back collection sites. In Garrett County these devices will only be accepted during the take back event. Only devices with the batteries removed will be accepted. For disposal of devices that have batteries that cannot be removed, or during any time other than the take back day, call the Garrett County Landfill at 301-387-0322.
Last fall Americans turned in nearly 469 tons (more than 937,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 17 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 11.8 million pounds—approximately 5,900 tons—of pills.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Maryland Humanities announces that executive director Phoebe Stein will depart from the organization, effective February 28, 2020. Stein has served as the executive director at Maryland Humanities for more than eleven years. A national search will be conducted to seek her replacement.
“My time with this outstanding organization has been professionally and personally life-changing—tremendously rewarding, productive, and enriching,” says Stein. “Maryland Humanities is thriving—financially strong, conducting impactful and deeply relevant programming directed by a talented and committed staff, and governed by an engaged and effective board. I know the future is bright for Maryland Humanities. I have the fullest confidence in our team and our strong partnerships and know that our work bringing the joy and power of discovery to the State of Maryland will go uninterrupted in this transition.”
Stein began her tenure at Maryland Humanities in July 2008. Cynthia Raposo, Chair of the Board of Directors says, “We have had the enormous good fortune to have such a smart, effective, and practical leader for so many years. Under her leadership, Maryland Humanities has experienced significant and meaningful growth in its programs, audiences, staff and financial support. Whether it was connecting Maryland History Day winners with their representatives at the Maryland State House and the US Capitol, introducing budding student authors to author Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche at our 2017 One Maryland One Book events, or fostering a responsive environment allowing us to explore criminal justice reform and launch a Humanities Fund for Baltimore in 2015, Phoebe has raised the bar for the organization and her successor.”
During Stein’s tenure, Maryland Humanities has significantly expanded its programming, partnerships, and resources—despite arriving just a few months prior to the Great Recession. The organization now offers more than one thousand free events annually in partnership with more than 500 organizations in 150+ communities statewide.
University of Maryland, Baltimore County President and former Chair of the Maryland Humanities Board of Directors Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, said this about Stein’s coming departure, “The humanities help us reflect on our past, understand our present, and shape our future. Under Phoebe’s leadership, Maryland Humanities has redoubled its efforts to bring lifelong learning in the humanities to every corner of the state, bringing people together in communities to connect across what may seem unbridgeable divides and recognize our shared humanity. The result is a thoughtful and informed citizenry and thus a stronger democracy in our state. I join my colleagues at Maryland Humanities in thanking Phoebe for her many years of outstanding and dedicated leadership, and I look forward to the continued success of this vitally important organization.”
While at the organization, Stein has also served as both Vice Chair and a member of the Legislative Committee of the Federation of State Humanities Councils Board of Directors, the Advisory Board of Brotman Financial Group, the Social Studies Advisory Council of the State of Maryland, and the Maryland Preservation Heritage Council. She was recognized as one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women” by The Daily Record in 2016. Stein earned her B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Loyola University of Chicago.
