Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. The Garrett County NAACP is hosting a Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 19th, from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. The day begins at the nearby Bethel Center with a performance of spirituals by the Garrett Choral Arts Society. Following the performance, the event moves to the Leo Martin Memorial Park in Mountain Lake Park for an afternoon of community and culture. The celebration features keynote speaker Carmen Jackson, historian Karen White, and local poets. Join Deep Creek Lake Lion's Club on June 23, 5:30 PM, for the official opening of our new pavilion dedicated to Ed King. Ed was a long-time Lion, a Past President of the club, Melvin Jones Fellow, and the backbone of the club for many years. Often referred to as "the mayor of Deep Creek Lake," Ed also had a deep love for the area and was active in many other organizations. We're expecting that our new 40x70 ft Pavilion will facilitate many new community events. We'll have a short dedication program, and then we'll roll right into our regular Lions Club dinner meeting, which everyone is welcome to attend. The Town of Oakland, Maryland holds a fireworks display each year on July 3 at Broadford Lake park. The rain date is July 5. The Garrett Community Concert Band Choral Society presents a musical celebration and a salute to our Armed Forces. The concert begins 7:30 pm at the amphitheater. The fireworks will begin at the conclusion of the concert which will be at approximately 9:30 pm.
