August marks the official halfway point of the Park Quest Season. Here’s what recent Park Questers had to say: “We had a great weekend out west. We started at Sang Run, enjoying the peaceful reflection. Then we hopped over to Herrington Manor for that quest, and enjoyed the walk and the stations. While there, we took a side trip to Swallow Falls, and walked the Swallow Falls Canyon Trail. I got some beautiful pictures of all four waterfalls. Tips for park questers: When we know the quest is art-related, Hannah carries a set of colored pencils to give her a larger variety of colors she can use to draw things. Tip: Research other non-Park Quest parks in the area. We loved Swallow Falls. It was beautiful.”  — Team Dynamic Duo: Terry & Hannah Sheely – first-time Questers

GILL is a member-driven organization whose mission is to enrich lives by offering a variety of educational, cultural, and social programs geared toward adults primarily 50+ years of age, but is open to all. Current members describe GILL as, “learning just for the fun of it.”

Garrett County Heritage Area Receives $129,631 From Maryland Heritage Areas Authority: Two Projects Awarded

Two grant applications submitted by The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area Maryland Heritage Area were awarded funding by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA), totaling $129,631. MHAA awarded 109 matching grants totaling nearly $5 million to Maryland nonprofit organizations, local jurisdictions and tourism groups. The grants fund historic preservation, natural resource protection and educational programs in 13 state-designated Heritage Areas. By supporting capital projects and educational activities, the grants spawn renewed interest in Maryland culture from residents and visitors, boosting tourism-related jobs.

Kim Folk, Heritage Area & Groups Director said, “We received applications for impactful projects from organizations in our heritage area this year and we are thrilled to have two projects awarded in a very competitive round of applications.  These grants will allow the recipients to expand awareness of heritage here in Garrett County.”

One hundred thirty-eight (138) applications were submitted to MHAA totaling over $7.6 million in requested funds.

Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area projects funded were:

  • Town of Oakland ($29,631) – Heritage Trail Improvements
  • Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area ($100,000) – Management Grant for management services of the certified heritage area with a goal to promote heritage tourism.

The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area is a program of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and provides the one-to-one match for the management and marketing grants. The Garrett County Heritage Area & Groups Director administers the Heritage Area Program and works with stakeholders by offering technical and grant assistance for heritage related initiatives that preserve valuable heritage resources and enhance tourism in the County.

The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area supports heritage tourism in Garrett County through technical assistance and grant opportunities with a focus on heritage related initiatives that preserve valuable heritage resources and enhance tourism in the County.  As a state certified heritage area, effort is made to create public and private partnerships to preserve historical, cultural and natural resources focusing on under-utilized resources fostering a greater sense of community pride.

“Being a state certified heritage area provides us access to funds without which many of the projects awarded would be unable to proceed,” said Folk. “The funding also allows us to promote heritage and cultural attractions in our community and attract visitors to our area.

The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area has secured more than $1.3 million in funding from MHAA over the last seven years.

Lions Visit Lions Camp Merrick

On July 10th 31 Lions went on a bus trip to Lions Camp Merrick in Nanjemoy, MD. The camp hosts diabetic campers for 3-week long sessions. Also, the camp has added a deaf camper week and a blind camper week this year.

From the Camp Merrick website, they state the following:

At Lions Camp Merrick we believe that each child needs to feel special and not special needs. One of the greatest experiences in life is the look of joy and pride in a child’s eyes when they accomplish something they thought they never could or would do. LCM’s programs match the needs and abilities of the children we serve so they are given the chance to “be all they can be”. Our dedicated counselors are always on hand to instruct and give caring guidance to our campers, but they find that it is our amazing children themselves who play the largest part in supporting and encouraging each other.

LCM is a special place, a unique haven for children in today’s fast-paced world. Here campers laugh, learn, and live together as they enjoy the pleasures of summertime friendship and fun. They build skills and character and create remarkable friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Lion visitors from District 22-W enjoyed a wonderful lunch with the diabetic campers and presented donation checks to the camp from the district. After lunch, the visitors were given a tour of the camp and returned home the same day.

There are scholarships available for campers so they can attend the camp at no charge. It is a great experience for type I diabetic children to interact with other children having the same disease. If you have a type I diabetic child between the age of 6 -16, contact the camp at: lionscamperrick.org. You can also contact Lions District 22-W Diabetes Chair Lion Donna Jackman at 301-790-2036

Deep Creek Times Announces Second Annual Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Challenge

DeepCreekTimes.com today announced the launch of the second annual Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Challenge, a “competition” designed to celebrate and recognize the Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake, MD area’s favorite experiences, services, products, and professionals. The challenge is designed to allow local businesses and individuals to celebrate all that makes the Deep Creek Lake area special and memorable.

“We are thrilled to announce the 2019 People’s Choice Challenge. The decision to continue was easy due to the strong community involvement and great competitive spirit exhibited by all of the nominees last year. In fact, last year we had about 2,500 nominees and over 175,000 votes, culminating in a fun, well-attended awards celebration in September,” stated Sarah Myers, co-owner of Deep Creek Times.

Myers and co-owner Mike Tumbarello said specific award categories will vary a bit from last year’s specific categories. In addition to categories such as favorite lake view, favorite local secret, and favorite historical attraction, voters will also be able to support their favorite products, services, and professionals.

Anyone can nominate an entrant (or entrants) in any of the categories by going to the Deep Creek Times website (www.deepcreektimes.com) from July 19th at 12:00am EST through August 2nd at 11:59pm EST.  The Deep Creek Times team will then gather and verify nominations and open the website to voting by members of the public from August 16th through September 27th.

Voters are limited to one vote (for as many nominees and categories as they wish) per device, per day.

According to Mike Tumbarello, co-owner of Deep Creek Times, “The Challenge is designed to be open, fun and to instill pride and friendly competition among the area’s nominees.  The first year was a bit of an experiment, but due to its success, the challenge will keep most of the facets of that inaugural year and build-in some new components as well. We hope to continue to build on last year’s celebration, pride and community engagement and keep the momentum growing in our great community.”

All nominations for entrants must be received by midnight EST August 2nd. All votes must be received by midnight EST September 27th.  Vying for first place “Diamond” and runner-up “Platinum” awards, finalists will be notified within one week of the voting closing.

Winners will receive a wall plaque, recognition on deepcreektimes.com and bragging rights for a year! There is another recognition celebration planned along with a special People’s Choice Challenge advertising feature for all nominees.
