The Cornucopia Café donates to area students

The Cornucopia Café is holding their annual fundraiser for area organization “It’s in the Bag.” Since 2016, the Grantsville restaurant has donated nearly $8000 through direct contributions by generous patrons and cash matches by the restaurant’s owners, Mike Dreisbach and Jan Russell.

“It’s in the Bag” is a weekend and holiday take-home food program for at-risk elementary school children. This program, administered by the Episcopal Church of Garrett County, seeks to fill the nutrition gap between weekly school meal programs and the dietary deficit often experienced by children over weekends and during school holidays. Each Friday, backpacks are anonymously sent home with 250 qualifying children from seven Garrett County elementary schools.

It costs approximately $280 per year to supply each child with a backpack. That’s less than $7 a week to help a student to perform well by arriving to school with a full stomach on Monday morning.

The fundraiser is running through Sunday, September 2. Donations can be made by cash, check, or credit card in person at the restaurant, or over the phone by calling 301-895-8142. Each Monday a $20 gift card winner will be selected from the previous week’s donations.

Find a dark area in the county and look up or use a telescope.

Brookfield Renewable Announces Work At Deep Creek Dam

Brookfield Renewable announced today that they will be undertaking multiple projects at Deep Creek Dam, which will take place from mid-August and last into early/mid Fall.

The first project will be mobilizing on site beginning next week (8/15), with work expected to begin shortly thereafter. This is an intake bridge concrete mitigation project that will consist of concrete work on the intake structure at Deep Creek Dam. This maintenance work is necessary to maintain the long term structural integrity of the intake structure, which is utilized to discharge water from the lake, ultimately controlling water levels. It is located roughly 250 yards upstream from the dam.

The second project that will be taking place will commence on, or soon after, August 27th and will run approximately 10 weeks. The project will consist of clearing and grubbing along with installation of an enhanced filter blanket and toe drainage system and is instrumental in the long term safe performance of the dam.

Brookfield Renewable wanted to make the public aware of the following:

  • Increased vehicle & truck activity in and out of Mayhew Inn Rd. Trucks may be hauling gravel and materials to and from the site.
  • Contractors will be on site during weekdays until completion of projects
  • Barge work will be required, so you will see boats near the intake structure in areas off limits to public access
  • Measures are in place to limit this, but more noise than usual will be prevalent at the site due to the nature of the work taking place

Brookfield Renewable is asking that the public respect all signage and barriers in place during the length of this project, to include staying back from the boat balls/buoys that are in place near the intake structure to warn the public not to proceed any further.

Brookfield Renewable Manager of Stakeholder Relations Brian Noonan said, “While these projects will not impact the public with regards to any changes in water levels, etc., we wanted to make everyone aware of potential increased activity that may be taking place. As always, we ask that applicable signage and barriers are respected.”

Anyone with questions or concerns are encouraged to reach out to Brian Noonan at (617) 838-2658 or to e-mail Inquiries.MD@brookfieldrenewable.com.

GC approved to launch Addictions Counseling program

Degree will serve community needs, provide training in job-rich field

Garrett College has been approved to offer an addiction’s counseling degree program beginning this fall.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission recently approved the college’s application to offer an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in addictions counseling.  College officials said the program will address a regional – and national – concern while training students for a career field with expanding job opportunities.

“Substance abuse costs society $442 billion each year in health costs, lost productivity and criminal justice costs,” said Dr. Terry Kasecamp, a Garrett College professor of psychology who designed the new program, adding that ongoing healthcare and criminal justice reform efforts are expanding the need for addiction prevention and treatment services.

“The demand for addictions counselors is expected to increase significantly,” added Dr. Kasecamp, citing recent initiatives requiring insurance plans to cover addiction and substance abuse treatment as well as the trend toward states seeking treatment rather than jail time for drug offenders.

“The opioid crisis has intensified the need for colleges to provide qualified counselors who can help Western Maryland effectively deal with this issue,” said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College’s president.  “This program will address that need and help prepare local residents to fill an expanding number of positions in this vital field.”

Job growth for substance abuse and behavioral health counselors is projected to increase by 22 percent nationwide and 35 percent in Maryland between 2014 and 2024, according to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.  Those statistics played a role in Garrett College’s decision to develop the new degree program, according to Dr. Qing Yuan, GC’s dean of academic affairs and chief academic officer.

“This degree aligns with GC’s mission statement and strategic plan objective to create innovative and sustainable programs that serve community needs and train students for careers with strong employment opportunities,” said Dr. Yuan.

Garrett College’s program is designed for students who plan to qualify as a certified supervised alcohol and drug counselor (CSC-AD) and enter the workforce after completing a two-year degree in addictions counseling.  The program meets a Maryland state requirement that CSC-ADs have an associate’s degree or higher in a human services counseling field that includes 24 college credits in addiction- and counseling-related coursework and a six-credit field placement.

While AAS degrees are meant primarily for immediate entry into the job force, the program has been designed to help facilitate transfer to four-year institutions, including Frostburg State University.

“Garrett College has a long history of partnering with FSU through articulation agreements,” noted Dr. Yuan.  “FSU offers bachelor’s degree programs in psychology and social work that include a specialization track in addictions counseling.  We plan to work closely with FSU so that students who wish to go on for a four-year degree in this field have a practical local option.”

A VolunCation Story

From HART for Animals:

When on vacation, many people want just to relax and do things that are fun.  There is a special kind of person for whom doing something relaxing and fun on vacation is volunteering and being of service to others.  In essence, taking a “VolunCation”.  These are the kind of people that Caroline Kitt, a ninth grader from Bethesda, MD, and her mom, Cheryl, are…generous, kind, compassionate, and excited about being of service.

Caroline needed to do some service learning hours this summer and, with her mom, decided that when she was visiting family at Deep Creek Lake this summer, she wanted to volunteer at HART for Animals. They planned in advance to complete in the spring the required HART training sessions in Volunteer Orientation (Level I) and Animal Safety and Handling (Level II).  That way, when they arrived for their summer vacation, they would be ready to go.  Cheryl decided to complete the training along with her daughter, and ended up loving being at HART so much that she volunteered right along side Caroline.  They each volunteered over 35 hours with us in about two weeks time.

When Caroline returned home, she sent us a reflection piece she wrote on her experience.   It was a chronicle of her time at HART in which she details her understanding of the importance of Level I hours as a way to learn “how much needs to be done for HART to be able to function as wonderfully as it does”; her experience as a Level II volunteer during which she “really enjoyed walking the dogs because it helped me understand more about each of the dog personalities”; and her time volunteering in the Vet Clinic where she observed spay/neuter surgeries and shadowed the vets during client appointments.  All of this helped her better understand what a possible career in animal welfare and medicine might be like while at the same time donating her time, energy and talents back to us.  Her experience was a true service learning opportunity… both service and learning.

We are so grateful to both Caroline and Cheryl for their time volunteering at HART for Animals during their vacation.  It was generosity and compassion in action that they not only donated their vacation time but labeled it as one of their best vacations ever!  We thank them for their time with us and are honored to name Caroline and Cheryl as this month’s spotlighted volunteers.  Already, we are looking forward to their next vacation here in Garrett County!

Thank you to all our HART Volunteers who have donated a total of 1,220 hours in the month of July!
