Today’s weather will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 72; scattered showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Gradually becoming mostly clear tonight with a low around 60.

Thinking out loud:  My wife jean and I were in Alaska for a few weeks and really loved it – very beautiful with its high peaks, glaciers and “exotic” wildlife. But, I must admit that it was great to come home to good old Garrett County, which has its own special beauty, great people and is a lot closer to “civilization.”

Learning Beyond the Classroom (LBTC) has two stops in the county today. The bus, designed to enhance school readiness, will be at the Grantsville Senior Center from 9:30am – 11:00am and the Aviliton Community Center from 1:00pm – 2:30pmhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1540497849590261/.

The Maryland Workforce Legal Services Division of the Legal Aid Bureau (say that three times fast), will be at the Garrett Southern Outreach Center this afternoon from 2:30pm – 4:00pm.

According to a new study by WalletHub, the state of Maryland was ranked 26th best state in the nation to have a baby. The study considered a number of variables, including costs, access, and quality of care.  Our neighboring states had a mixed record.

The Garrett County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting this afternoon at Central Office in the Board Room. Public comment will begin at 4:00pm.

The latest Pig Out in the Park in Frostburg (at Hoffman Hollow Park) is this Saturday from 1:00pm – 8:00pm. It is a fund raiser for Frostburg First. To purchase tickets ($10) online you can visit frostburgfirst.eventbrite.com.

Music at Penn Alps is presenting Deborah Sternberg, soprano, with Anna Nizhegorodtseva accompanying on piano, on August 18th in the Great Hall at Spruce Forest in Grantsville, MD, at 7:30pm.

S.T.E.A.M. is HOT in Garrett County! By STEAM I mean Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.  Garrett College is ready to open their new STEM building and they just received approval and funding for their new Arts building. The College will host a STEM Building Grand Opening on September 8th starting at 9:00am with speakers, demonstrations and self-guided tours.
