Public-Private Partnership Announced In Effort To Prevent Invasive Species At Deep Creek

An initiative was announced today to assist with efforts in keeping the troublesome invasive species known as zebra mussels out of Deep Creek Lake.

The unique partnership between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Deep Creek Watershed Foundation and Brookfield Renewable will bring forward a robust zebra mussel monitoring plan which will utilize a combination of water quality sampling to assess zebra mussel suitability, and visual surveys to look for the possible presence of zebra mussels at Deep Creek Lake. Department of Natural Resources staff are coordinating and overseeing the monitoring program, which began in the Spring and will run through the fall. Zebra mussels were identified on two boats through the Launch Steward Program designed to inspect boats for potential invasive species before they enter the lake in 2016 and 2017. No zebra mussels have been identified in Deep Creek Lake.

Maryland DNR Statement: “The Deep Creek Lake zebra mussel monitoring project is a unique partnership that will enhance our efforts to evaluate and protect the Lake from a potential invasive species threat,” said Bruce Michael, director of the department’s Resource Assessment Service. “Monitoring and assessing all aspects of the lake, from water quality, habitat conditions, submerged aquatic vegetation, to fish are integral in understanding one of Maryland’s most treasured resources.”

John McVaigh, Director of Operations for Brookfield Renewable said, “When we were approached by Maryland DNR about the opportunity to assist in their preventative initiative, we saw it as an innovative, proactive effort to curtail this problematic invasive before it can wreak havoc on the lake and its ecosystem. We look forward to working together to ensure the continued sustainability and vibrancy of Deep Creek.”

David Myerberg, President of the Board of the Deep Creek Watershed Foundation said, “This is the kind of opportunity that our Foundation supports in line with the Deep Creek Watershed Management Plan, and we thank DNR and Brookfield for joining us to preserve and protect the watershed for posterity.”‘
How this program proceeds is dependent on a variety of factors, most notably, the outcome and results of the visual surveys and water quality sampling.

An interesting tidbit here is that the Maryland Traditions awards were created in 2007 and were then called the “Achievement in Living Traditions and Arts (ALTA) Awards,” named in honor of folklorist and Garrett County community leader Dr. Alta Schrock (1911-2001).

According to Tri-State News, Megan Shaffer was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Shaffer was found guilty in March of this year and sentenced yesterday in Garrett County for the January 4, 2017 death of Alexander Stevens. She is also listed as a defendant in a suit filed by Stevens’ father to stop Shaffer from receiving about $188,000 as beneficiary of an Alexander Stevens’ investment account. The date for that trial is August 24th.

Restoration of Aza Stanton Art Collection funded by Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area grant

Often referred to during his lifetime as “Garrett County’s Artist in residence,” Aza Stanton was a native son and lifelong resident of Garrett County. Now having passed away more than 50 years ago, his art continues to be highly visible throughout Garrett County and sought-after each year by the area’s many visitors.

Aza was gifted with the ability to artistically recreate the natural beauty so abundant throughout this far western area of Maryland. Educated at the Maryland Institute of Art, he quickly became known as one of Garrett County’s best-known artists.

Last year, James “Jim” Canty, nephew of Louise Stanton, wife of the late Aza Stanton, and his wife, Linda, of Stafford, Va., presented the College with a collection of Aza’s artwork as a gift.

Recently, College officials have announced that Manhattan Golf & Gallery has restored 25 pieces of the Aza Stanton artwork collection. “This restoration was made possible by funding as part of a grant through the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area & Maryland Heritage Areas Authority,” explained Kearstin Hinebaugh, Grants & Program Funds Coordinator for the College. “As the nucleus of the county, we are pleased that so many people will have an opportunity to enjoy this impressive collection of artwork.”

The general public and community are invited to visit the College’s main McHenry campus, where the Aza Stanton artwork collection is on display throughout.

Deep Creek Times Announces Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Challenge

Today DeepCreekTimes.com announced the launch of the Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Challenge a new “competition” designed to celebrate and recognize the Deep Creek lake area’s favorite experiences, services, products and professionals.

The People’s Choice Challenge is designed to allow local businesses and individuals to celebrate all that makes the Deep Creek Lake area special and memorable.  The four categories will include 40 individual experiences, services, products and professionals that locals and visitors can nominate and vote for as their favorites.

“We believe the Deep Creek Lake area is a very special place with some very special attributes that deserve recognition” stated Sarah Myers, co-owner of Deep Creek Times. “We used our own experiences and asked others what would be the best categories to have people vote for their favorites.  We wanted to transcend businesses and their offerings and include some of the other things that make Garrett County and the lake special. That’s why we have categories for such things as favorite lake view, favorite local secret and favorite historical attraction.”

Anyone can nominate an entrant in any of the categories by going to the Deep Creek Times website (www.deepcreektimes.com) from July 25th through August 8th.  The Deep Creek Times team will then gather and list all of the nominations on their website for voting by members of the public from August 9th through September 8th.. Voters are limited to one vote (for as many nominees as they wish) per device, per day.

According to Mike Tumbarello, co-owner of Deep Creek Times, “The Challenge is designed to be open, fun and to instill pride and friendly competition among the area’s nominees.  We hope to make this an annual event and refine it as time passes.  This first year is a bit of an experiment and is noteworthy for its inclusiveness and simple rules and voting protocols.  We will even accept votes by “snail mail” to our PO box in McHenry. It’s all about celebration, pride and community engagement.”

All nominations for entrants must be received by midnight, August 8th.  All votes must be received by midnight, September 8th.  First place Diamond winners and runner-up Platinum winners will be notified within one week of the “polls” closing.  Winners will receive a wall plaque, recognition on deepcreektimes.com and bragging rights for a year!

For more information about the Challenge or deepcreektimes.com please contact Sarah Myers (sarah@deepcreektimes.com or via phone at 240.321.9925) or Mike Tumbarello ( mike@deepcreektimes.com  or via phone at 410.707.7725).

Yesterday was interesting with clouds and pockets of rain in a few areas but overall a very nice day. The weather for today will be a chance of showers with thunderstorms likely after 1pm. The high temperature near 70 and the low temperature around 63; winds can gust as high as 21 mph.

First United Bank and Trust will be holding a Blood Drive at their Operations Center in Oakland today in conference rooms one and two from 9:30am – 3:00pm. This drive is open to employees as well as the general public. You can register at www.redcrossblood.org by entering FirstUnitedOakland to schedule an appointment.

Just heard that the Mountain Maryland Writers’ Institute at Garrett College has been cancelled.  It was scheduled to run from Thursday – Sunday at a variety of locations in the county. That’s a shame as it was a really strong program.

The Science Room at the Discovery Center at Deep Creek State Park is open all day today for fun activities geared to exploration, learning and fun.  The Discovery Center is a nice place to visit on a rainy day or any day.

Don’t forget that the nomination forms for Garrett County’s Most Beautiful Person are still available online.  Anyone can nominate an exceptional volunteer in the county that deserves recognition through August 24th.

A recent reader pointed out that we had only shared the unofficial primary election results thus far so here is a link to the 2018 official results — the key contested race was for District 3 Commissioner: Fred Fox had 828 votes, Bob Gatto had 1,221 votes and Jim Hinebaugh won with 1,302 votes (a margin of 81).

Here’s a link to late July and early August events at New Germany State Park. NGSP and our other parks are a wonderful asset for our community.

Speaking of state parks, here’s a listing we just received for activities at Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls State Parks for activities later in the week. Some nice activities for the whole family:

The weekend was another nice one, with just some sparse showers on Sunday. Today’s weather will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms; a high near 75 and a low around 66.

There’s a lecture this morning at the Ruth Enlow Library titled “Civility Today” by Daniel Buccino, co-founder of the Johns Hopkins Civility Initiative in 1998 and currently its director.

Delusional Dissonance, featuring the artwork of Jennifer Lynne Ziemann and Syprian Harvey is at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland until August 11th.

Speaking of the arts in Cumberland, Yumi Hogan, Maryland’s First Lady will be featured in an exhibit and a special reception at the Gilchrist Museum in Cumberland starting this afternoon at 4:30pm. Arts “Nature’s Harmony: East and West” will be held featuring the paintings of Yumi Hogan, Mark Nicolas and art from the Janice Gilmore Youth Scholarship workshop.

As a cofounder (Mike) of the Mountain Maryland Tech Network, I can tell you that there are a lot more “techies” in Western Maryland than you might think and there’s a program this Tuesday in Hagerstown on SBIR and STTR tech funding.  Good stuff if you own/manage a technology business or are thinking of a start-up.

Here’s a link to an interesting piece by Steven Doctor, Ocean City area fish biologist. It deals with salt water fish mysteries but I thought readers might find it interesting.  I wonder if DNR ever encounters any “surprise” species here in or around the lake?
