Utilize Nutrition Benefits and Go Further with Food during National Nutrition Month

As part of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sponsored National Nutrition Month, Garrett Regional Medical Center urges area residents to go further with food and learn how adopting healthy habits can help individuals with chronic illnesses better manage their symptoms.

National Nutrition Month aims to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.    The outpatient nutrition counseling services at GRMC helps patients diagnosed with chronic illnesses to develop healthy habits to better manage their conditions.

“The opportunity to learn more about how to better manage chronic conditions through nutrition counseling is often a health care benefit that many individuals are not aware or do not necessarily utilize on a regular basis,” said Ruth Chisholm, Registered Dietitian and Licensed Nutritionist at Garrett Regional Medical Center.   “Nutrition counseling helps empower our patients with the tools and information they need to better manage their health.”

Individuals diagnosed with diabetes and non-dialysis kidney disease who are recipients of Medicare Part B are eligible for three hours of Medical Nutrition Therapy for their first year and two hours each year thereafter.  Medicare Part B beneficiaries can simply receive a referral from their primary care physician with an approved diagnosis requirement to participate in managed nutrition therapy.

Insured individuals can contact their insurance companies to confirm the extent of their coverage for nutrition services as it often varies by provider.   Providers traditionally offer Medical Nutrition Therapy for individuals diagnosed with diabetes and kidney disease and some insurance companies will also offer this benefit for diagnoses of heart disease or obesity.

The National Nutrition Month 2018 theme of “Go Further with Food” aims to provide awareness of how to manage food resources at home to save both nutrients and money.  Go Further with Food wants you to consider what food items you have on hand before you buy more at the store, be mindful of portion sizes, use good food safety practices and find activities you enjoy to maintain physical activity throughout the week.

“This month, we’ll be featuring budget-friendly, healthy recipes on the Facebook pages of GRMC and Grantsville Medical Center in recognition of National Nutrition Month,” added Chisholm.  “I also encourage folks to utilize USDA’s program website, www.choosemyplate.gov,  which offers nutritious eating tips, healthy recipes and other healthy learning tools.”

For more information on outpatient nutrition counseling, please contact Ruth Chisholm at 301-533-4010.

Lakers lose in overtime in region semifinals

Rolling over top-seeded Frederick Community College, 76-60, in Friday’s NJCAA Region XX Division II quarterfinal was a nice achievement for the Garrett College men’s basketball team.  The eighth-seeded Lakers were hoping to build on that achievement in Saturday night’s semifinal against fourth-seeded host Cecil College.

GC came up just short of a second straight upset win, falling to the Seahawks, 79-75 in overtime.

Seahawk Jordan Griggs (team-high 15 points) sank two free throws with 14 seconds left in regulation to create a 63-63 tie and force overtime.  Cecil’s Caleb Johnson (14 points off the bench) scored five points in the extra period, including a tie-breaking jumper with 1:11 to play that put the Seahawks ahead to stay, as Cecil (15-17) advanced to Sunday’s title game against second-seeded College of Southern Maryland.

Garrett head coach Dennis Gibson lauded his team’s effort in the regional tournament.

“We beat the #1 seed and then had to play Cecil at Cecil and they still put themselves in a position to win,” said Gibson, whose team finished the season with a 14-13 record.  “That’s all you can ask of a team.”

The Lakers trailed by six before finishing the first half on a 7-1 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Nelson Richardson (8 points) that pulled Garrett into a 31-31 halftime tie.  Cecil reclaimed the momentum with a 6-0 run that included a pair of hoops from Kamden Stubblefield (9 points) to take a 46-41 lead with 11:49 left in regulation.

Garrett kept fighting back, retaking the lead at 61-59 when Ariel Watson (game-high 25 points) nailed a 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining in regulation.  Keyon Givens got the Seahawks even with a layup 19 seconds later, but Watson’s layup with 1:19 left put the Lakers back on top and set the stage for Griggs’ game-tying free throws.

The Lakers hurt themselves at the foul line, going 4-for-10 compared to Cecil’s 17-for-22, and had twice as many turnovers as the Seahawks (14 to 7).  Even so, the Lakers had a golden opportunity to win the game right at the end of regulation, but couldn’t connect.  Watson missed a wide-open jumper with four seconds remaining and Simun Kovac (12 points, 14 rebounds) hauled in the offensive rebound but missed the put-back in heavy traffic.

Gibson said his squad’s performance in the regional tournament was much more indicative of their potential that the team’s final record, which was impacted by a slew of injuries.

“Simun had time to get better; Jermaine [Samuel, who scored 15 against Cecil] had time to get better,” said Gibson, whose squad was relatively healthy for the tournament.  “That gave us confidence because now we had guys we could rotate in.”

Garrett 76, Frederick 60

NORTH EAST – Ariel Watson scored a game-high 24 points and hauled in seven rebounds as the eighth-seeded Lakers shocked top-seeded Frederick Community College (22-6) in Friday’s regional quarterfinals.

Simun Kovac (13 points, 11 rebounds), Ray Hinton (12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), and reserve Nelson Richardson (11 points, 3 assists) joined Watson in double figures for Garrett, which blew out to a 37-20 halftime lead.

Keon Claiborne scored a team-high 15 points off the bench for Frederick while Dashon Bell added 14 points.

Garrett Regional Medical Center has announced a new website in an effort to better reflect their growing list of services and their affiliation with WVU medicine, while still showcasing the hospital’s Garrett County roots.

Here’s an interesting map of Maryland in 1856!

I took this quick time-lapse video this morning:

Garrett Regional Medical Center launches new website

Garrett Regional Medical Center has launched a new, easy to use website that more accurately reflects the growing list of patient services available at the 55-bed inpatient facility.

The new site, found at www.grmc-wvumedicine.org, incorporates the colors and essential design elements of the WVU Medicine network, with which GRMC is affiliated. While the colors and design are reflective of WVU, the new site maintains the essence and character of Garrett Regional Medical Center (GRMC), ensuring that the website reflects the local hospital that has long served the Garrett County region.

“We wanted to update our site to make sure our patients can find physicians and services as quickly and easily as possible,” says Kendra Thayer, Senior Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “While our old site contained some of the basic information found at www.grmc-wvumedicine.org, it was not easy to navigate. Plus, as our services grew, it was cumbersome adding them to our online profile. With our new web address, updating the material is much easier, and in general, we think our patients and their families will find the new site easier to navigate and that it houses better, more useful information.”

Since affiliating with WVU Medicine in 2015, Garrett Regional Medical Center has added a number of specialty services not typically found in rural hospitals. The addition of health care specialties such as nephrology and heart and vascular care has enabled residents of GRMC’s service area, which includes approximately 46,000 people living in communities in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, to receive the care they need close to where they live.

Services profiled on the hospital’s new website include ophthalmology, orthopaedics, nephrology, heart and vascular care, surgery, cancer care, internal medicine, palliative care, emergency services – the list is lengthy. The site also allows for a seamless job application process for potential employees, and even allows patients or family members to thank a nurse or other caregiver by filling out a simple, online form. Once the form is submitted, the caregiver will be recognized by the hospital for a job well done.

“Our goal is to ensure that the health care needs of our community are met,” says Mark Boucot, CEO and President of GRMC. “We have been able to make great strides in the medical services we provide since our affiliation with WVU Medicine. Our new website makes it easy for patients and community members to find information about their local health care facility, and to locate information they may find useful regarding their health overall. We hope the community sees our site as a tool to facilitate health care access.”

Since opening the Adoption Wing in April of 2016, 580 animals have found new homes.

  • Cephalon, Inc. of Frazer, PA
  • Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. of Israel

Garrett County and Montgomery County are being represented by Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, a national law firm with offices in Washington D.C. “This is a public health crisis affecting nearly every community in the county” Commissioner Edwards said. “There are certain counties across the state where the numbers are much larger, but we are seeing increases in the last year alone. It doesn’t change the need and impact we have here.” He said, “We believe a good start is to aggressively confront one of the root causes of this national epidemic: the pharmaceutical companies and those paid by the pharmaceutical companies who put profits before public health and safety.”
