A Community Visioning Workshop will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at the Garrett College Special Events Center (also known as the old gymnasium), 687 Mosser Rd, McHenry MD, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. At that site access is given to the 2008 Comprehensive Plan as well as other useful information. There is also a public comment form that can be used to submit comments. In addition, the public is invited to follow and comment on the Facebook page created and managed by the consultants, AECOM. The 4th Annual Ruth Enlow Friendsville Town Library Fundraiser 5K Run/3K Walk will be held Saturday May 26th, 2018

The 4th Annual Ruth Enlow Friendsville Town Library Fundraiser 5K Run/3K Walk will be held Saturday May 26th, 2018. This family friendly event on the Kendall Trail along the Youghiogheny Wild and Scenic River is as fun as it is beautfiul. Cash prizes for first, second and third place male and female runners will be awarded with special prizes awarded to the top three Youth under 18 as well as to the oldest and youngest runners.Official timing is provided by the Queen City Striders.

Over 41 prize sponsors are supporting the event this year. Walkers are encouraged to take their time and smell the flowers and will be entered into a raffle to win some fantastic prizes such as organic plants, greens, honey and even rafting and camping.

The Kendall Trail is an old railroad grade that has a solid base and follows along the scenic river to the turn-around points. A water station is situated along the way. The 5K run is described as possibly being a little bit wet, a little bit rugged and a little bit wild while the 3K walk section is pretty mild.

The Hellbender is much larger than all other salamanders in its geographic range, and employs an unusual means of respiration (which involves cutaneous gas exchange through capillaries found in its dorsoventral skin folds). It fills a particular niche — both as a predator and prey — in its ecosystem, which either it or its ancestors have occupied for around 65 million years. The species is now listed as Near Threatened and is found only in clean, fresh, water.

Hallenbeck Reaches 300 Win Milestone

Hallenbeck Reaches 300 Win Milestone

Eric Hallenbeck, Garrett College’s Head Men’s Baseball Coach, earned his 300th win on March 30, 2018 with a 12-2 victory over MDJUCO and Region XX opponent – Cecil College.

In his 14th season as the head coach at Garrett College, Hallenbeck has coached and been a part of the following individual and team achievements for Garrett Lakers baseball under his leadership: Golden Glove Award winner, two Big Stick Award winners, NJCAA First Team All-American, NJCAA Academic All-American, and numerous MDJUCO, District 4, and Region XX Team selections. In 2015, the Garrett Lakers baseball team made an appearance to the Division II Region XX Final Four.

Hallenbeck also recruited and coached Allan Bencid, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles.  Bencid played the position of catcher for the Garrett Lakers in 2012-13.

“Reaching this milestone is incredibly humbling for me in many ways,” said Hallenbeck of his 300th win.  “I’ve watched numerous players advance to four-year schools, succeed in life, and have families of their own.  I’ve also created and developed lifelong friendships over the years – now that’s what it’s all about.”

“I appreciate the Garrett College community for the opportunity here in McHenry,” continued Hallenbeck.  “I’m proud of what we’ve done here with the Garrett Lakers baseball program and what we will continue to do.”

Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College’s president, said Hallenbeck’s career is defined by much more than just an impressive number of wins.

“Eric is not only a successful coach because of how his teams succeed on the field, but also because of how he helps them succeed off the field,” said Midcap.  “You don’t have to observe Eric with his team long to see how much he cares for his players as people and what an impact he has on their lives.”

“I’m especially thankful to all the players, assistant coaches and parents over the years that have helped the program reach this mark – they are just as much a part of reaching this milestone,” Hallenbeck said.  “The Garrett Baseball family knows all too well how trying times may be – but no matter what, we have always stayed together.”

In the US, it started when workers in Chicago pushed for an eight-hour work day way back on May 1st, 1886.  A little trivia for you.
