A recent study revealed the U.S. states with the richest history based on their density of National Historic Landmarks. To identify these states, the team at DealsDaddy found the states which have the most historic landmarks per 1,000 sq. miles, as well as the states with the most Medal of Honor recipients per capita.
For this comparison, the data analysts at DealsDaddy pulled official data from the National Register of Historic Places and the National Medal of Honor Museum. Rhode Island emerges as the state with the most landmarks per square mile, whereas Vermont tops the list of states with the most war heroes per 100,000 residents.
Here are a few key takeaways from the report:
- With an average of 43.53 historic landmarks per 1,000 square miles, Rhode Island is the state with the greatest density of sites of historical and cultural significance in the U.S.
- It is followed by the states of Massachusetts (24.74 landmarks per 1,000 sq. miles), Connecticut (14.04), New Jersey (7.75), and Maryland (7.73)
- The highest number of historic landmarks, on the other hand, is in New York – 286 sites that offer a glance into America’s rich history and cultural diversity are located in the Empire State
- New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts have been home to the most Medal of Honor recipients – these states are known for 672, 379, and 265 men and women respectively recognized with the highest award for those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since the Civil War
- Vermont, however, tops them all when it comes to MoH recipients per 100,000 people followed by Maine and Massachusetts
