Building on the summer 2025 investment of 28 new snow guns, Wisp continues to enhance the winter experience with another major round of snowmaking improvements ahead of the 2026–27 winter season.
Snowmaking Upgrades Are Underway
Little Dipper Transformation
One of the most impactful projects of the summer is taking place on Little Dipper with a significant snowmaking infrastructure upgrade. This project includes:
- 2 new 20-foot permanent-mounted Technoalpin TL8 snowmaking stick guns
- 10 new 30-foot permanently mounted Technoalpine TL8 snowmaking stick guns
- Upgraded snowmaking infrastructure throughout the trail
The result is a significant increase in snow production, allowing the slope to open earlier and provide more reliable coverage throughout the season for the North Camp terrain.

Infrastructure Improvements That Make a Difference
The addition of 12 permanent Techno Alpine TL8 snowmaking guns creates more than just additional coverage on Little Dipper.
By permanently outfitting this terrain, eight portable snow guns will be redeployed to other key areas across the mountain, increasing overall snowmaking flexibility and capacity.

Snowmaking Infrastructure Investments
Behind every great snowmaking system is a powerful infrastructure network. Significant upgrades to strengthen the backbone of Wisp’s snowmaking system are planned for this summer.
New Water Supply Line
A new 700-foot, 24-inch snowmaking pipeline is being installed between a snowmaking pond and The Pumphouse. This project will increase snowmaking capacity.
Lower Wisp Trail Improvements
Approximately 800 feet of new snowmaking pipe on Lower Wisp Trail is being replaced, improving efficiency and reliability within the system. The lateral pipes are being replaced as well,l along with five men snowmaking hydrants.
Expanded Pump Capacity
A new lake pump is being added to the fleet, increasing the number of lake pumps. This upgrade will allow for more water flow from Deep Creek Lake, helping maximize snowmaking output during optimal snowmaking conditions.
Looking Ahead
These investments represent the long-term commitment to improve the guest experience and deliver the best possible snow surface. From increased snowmaking capacity and improved infrastructure to earlier terrain openings and enhanced coverage, the 2026–27 winter season is on the horizon and looking bright.
Planned General Manager Transition
Ron Hawkes to Retire Following the 2026-27 Winter Season; Erik Barnes Named General Manager Designate
Erik Barnes joins Wisp Resort as General Manager Designate and will ultimately succeed General Manager Ron Hawkes following Hawkes’ semi-retirement at the conclusion of the 2026-27 winter season. Together, Hawkes and Barnes represent nearly nine decades of ski industry experience and share a common passion for teaching, guest service, and growing participation in skiing and snowboarding. The transition is designed to ensure continuity for the staff, guests, community partners, and the resort’s many stakeholders.
Lift Infrastructure Investments
Chair 4
As part of the annual routine lift maintenance, Tower 3 and tower 6 are being replaced on Chair 4 on the East Ridge.
Additional Improvements
Larger projects tend to take center stage, but there are strategic upgrades in the works across several other key areas to continue elevating the guest experience.
New LED Lights On Every Slope
Systematic replacement of old infrastructure with LED lights throughout the property – both indoors and out. Whereby reducing energy use through more efficient lighting technology. Wisp has upgraded over 2000 lights on the property to LED since 2019 and completed all lighting upgrades in spring 2026.
Rental Equipment Fleet Rotation
To ensure guests have access to quality equipment, the rental fleet will receive updated skis, snowboards, boots, and poles. These investments help improve performance, comfort, and the overall rental experience for guests of all ability levels.
New Event Stage
A new event stage is being added to enhance the growing list of events, conferences, and other functions.
McHenry Lodge and Hearth & Hops Tavern
New air conditioning and heating improvements have been made throughout the McHenry Lodge and Hearth & Hops Tavern to improve guest experiences during all seasons.
Chairlift Unload Area Surveillance Cameras
New surveillance cameras are being installed at chairlift unload areas to enhance operational awareness and support guest safety throughout the mountain. These upgrades provide improved monitoring capabilities for resort operations and lift personnel.
