While classrooms may be quiet during the summer months, Garrett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) commitment to supporting students continues in full force. Through the GCPS Summer Food Service Program, a dedicated team of 19 staff members has served 70,042 nutritious meals, and counting, to children across Garrett County this summer.
Each week, the program has reached an average of 710 students, ensuring that children continue to have access to healthy breakfasts and lunches while school is out of session. The program helps bridge the nutritional gap many families face during the summer months, providing reliable, no-cost meals that support the health and well-being of local children.
Through meal preparation and packaging, transportation, and distribution, the success of the program is made possible by the dedication of the Food & Nutrition Services staff, drivers, site coordinators, and support personnel who work behind the scenes each day to ensure meals reach students safely and efficiently.
“Our Summer Food Service Program reflects the heart of Garrett County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Nicole Miller. “Our staff understands that learning doesn’t stop when school ends, and neither does our commitment to caring for our students. Serving more than 70,000 meals is an incredible accomplishment and a testament to the compassion and dedication of our Food & Nutrition Services team.”
The Summer Food Service Program is designed to provide free, nutritious meals to children throughout the summer when schools are not in session, helping families while promoting healthy eating habits and reducing food insecurity within the community.
“As the program nears its conclusion in a few weeks, I’d like to extend my sincere appreciation to the summer crew whose hard work, flexibility, and commitment have made this year’s program a tremendous success,” said Mr. Scott Germain, Supervisor of Food & Nutrition Services. “Their efforts have ensured that thousands of Garrett County children have had access to healthy meals throughout the summer.”

With more meals still to be served before the program concludes, the 2026 Summer Food Service Program continues to demonstrate that caring for students extends far beyond the classroom, ensuring they return to school healthy, nourished, and ready to learn.
