A new art and history project is putting a spotlight on a short stretch of track that helped set the direction of American transportation. “The First 13 Miles of American Rail” focuses on the original run of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between Baltimore and Ellicott’s Mills, treating it not as a footnote but as the moment railroads proved they could work as a practical, everyday technology rather than just an experiment.
The project argues that this stretch of track mattered because of what it connected: an ambitious port city looking to grow its reach inland, and an already-thriving mill town built around the Patapsco River, its farms, quarries, and roads. Rather than creating commerce out of nothing, the railroad amplified activity that was already happening, adding speed and capacity to a corridor that was already moving goods and people.
From that starting point, the project traces how the B&O’s westward expansion reshaped the region over time. As the line reached Cumberland, coal and iron began moving east in larger volumes, fueling a boom in that city and spurring new rail spurs and company towns throughout the surrounding valleys. The railroad eventually pushed on to the Ohio River and beyond, helping link distant regions into a single, larger economy. According to the project, Garrett County itself became part of that story, promoted by the B&O in later years as the “Switzerland of the Alleghanies” to draw visitors and settlement.
The project is still in its early stages. Organizers say a museum-quality painting and prints are planned for release later in 2026, along with a book, public presentations, and interpretive digital and educational materials, with more details to come as the project develops.
