The Local Behavioral Health Authority at the Garrett County Health Department is inviting the community to “Light It Up Green” this month for Mental Health Awareness.
“Show your support by illuminating your buildings, offices, or homes with green lighting throughout May,” said Sadie Liller, Garrett County Behavioral Health Authority. “This simple yet meaningful gesture helps raise awareness, reduce stigma, and demonstrate a shared commitment to mental health in our community. Remember, Mental Health is Health.”
This initiative is a part of a statewide project where communities across Maryland come together for Go Green for Mental Health, led by the Mental Health Association of Maryland.
On May 4th, the Garrett County Commissioners signed proclamations designating May as Mental Health Month and May 3-9, 2026, as Children’s Mental Health Week in Garrett County. Participants in the proclamation photo included representatives from the Health Department, Garrett County Light House, Adolescent and Young Adult Program, LMB/LBHA, and Garrett County Public Schools.
“We at the Garrett County Health Department agree that mental health is critical to the overall health of everyone,” said Jennifer Hare, Garrett County Health Officer. “To reinforce this fact, and help raise mental health awareness, we are lighting up the Health Department buildings green for the entire month of May.”
“Mental health care is an essential component involved in contributing to improved emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being of all Marylanders,” said Fred Polce, Director of Garrett County Behavioral Health Authority.
“It’s crucial to remember that mental health affects us all, influencing how we perceive life, experience emotions, and manage challenges,” Liller said. “This year, our office is sponsoring a weekly Mental Health Awareness Video Series with Elizabeth Robinette. The first week’s video is “Breaking the Stigma Surrounding Mental Health.” Visit https://garretthealth.org/category/mental-health/ to view this video, and the additional videos which will be added each week.”
The local green initiative is coordinated in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month and sponsored by the Garrett County Local Behavioral Health Authority in partnership with the Garrett County Health Department.
