The Garrett County Local Management Board (GCLMB), along with staff support from the Garrett County Local Behavioral Health Authority (GCLBHA), is proud to announce two major initiatives aimed at improving food access and supporting families facing food insecurity in our region.
The first initiative is the launch of a free, public food pantry located just outside the entrance to the Center for Behavioral Health at the Garrett County Health Department in Oakland, Maryland. This pantry is open to all community members and provides essential groceries and hygiene products, completely free of charge. With the rising cost of food and the increasing needs across Garrett County, this resource offers immediate, local support to individuals and families.
The pantry is stocked through community donations, and residents are encouraged to participate. Items currently being accepted include:
- Non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and boxed meals
- Hygiene products, including soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene supplies
A special thank you goes to Robert Paugh and Johnathan Paugh (pictured), for their craftsmanship in building the pantry box.
This quote from Charles Glassman says it all: “kindness begins with understanding that we all struggle,” said Sadie Liller, Adult Services Coordinator, GCLBHA.
In addition to the pantry, the Garrett County Local Management Board is also supporting the development of 360 Access Hub, a centralized site co-located with other critical community services. 360 Access Hub officially began serving community members by appointment on June 27th and will gradually expand enrollment over the coming weeks.
360 Access Hub will serve as a long-term food bank and access point for community support services, helping to address not only food needs but also the social and health factors that impact wellness and stability. This initiative is led by Shelley Argabrite and John Corbin at the Garrett County Health Department, Chris Mullet at Garrett County Community Action, and Lorena de Leon at Maryland Physicians Care.
“No one in our communities should have to choose between food and other basic needs,” said Fred Polce, Jr., GCLMB/GCLBHA Director. “This pantry is about members of our local communities working together to impact neighbors in the most beneficial ways. It’s a simple but powerful way to enhance community connectedness and impact wellness.”
Together, these efforts reflect these organizations’ ongoing commitment to integrated community care, ensuring that every resident has access to the food, support, and dignity they deserve.
