FREE Women’s + Beginner Group Trail/Mountain Bike Ride

Hey friends, we're offering womens+ casual group trail / MTB bike rides!! All abilities are welcome! Join us on Thursdays: Meet at 5:15 PM, wheels down at 5:30 PM. Return by 7:15 PM. The ladies will ride a portion of the trails at Broadford Lake Park as a chance to meet other bike riders (or want-to-be riders) stopping periodically along the way to reinforce skills needed to tackle the trail and to (definitely) take pictures of our bikes and wildflowers. This FREE ride is for beginner‐level riders looking to meet other female riders and improve their skills in a non-competitive atmosphere. We will ride about 3 miles of beginner-level terrain with some small uphill sections and fun-flowy sections. Questions on MTB skills are encouraged, and the intention is to have fun and gain confidence on the trails. The ride is open for all female or female-identifying riders. All are welcome to join this motorcycle ride! This ride is a benefit for Susanne Roszelle, who suffered a stroke on December 28th followed by a heart attack on January 28th. You can run the course 5k style, the trail is marked per mile, or go as much or as little as you would like. Easy for a family or small kids) We will have a kid-friendly craft, face painting, and food vendors available for purchase. Preregister with the QR code. Registration is $10 per person, if you would like a color run shirt you must pre-register, the cost with a t-shirt is $25 per person. A colored or a white shirt is available. Railroads of Garrett County: A History

Historic B&O Train Station 117 East Liberty Street, Oakland, MD, United States

Focusing mainly on the B&O, this revised class includes a new approach to the Preston railroad that operated in Crellin, and a brief description of how steam and diesel locomotives function. It includes a brief section on the effects of the Civil War on the B&O. It will cover the railroads in general terms for participants with even a mild interest in rail travel. In this class, historian, author, and educator, Dr. Neal Brooks will describe the railroad's development, decline, and main purposes. The course will consider the railroad's social and business aspects. We'll discuss two companies, B & O and Western Maryland, with remnants that are still present as part of CSX. We will focus on passenger service to this region in the 20th Century. We will also cover smaller coal/logging railroads that disappeared but had significant impact including the Confluence and Oakland, Preston Railroad, and the Jennings Brothers Railroad. This class is intended for a general audience interested in Garrett County and in general rail transportation history, not just rail fans. New Germany State Park will host Senior Rangers, a new series of programs designed for adults ages 55+, every Thursday from May 30 through June 27. Programs will include mushroom gardening, fishing, native plant identification, birding, and foraging. The programs are free (supported by the Friends of New Germany State Park), but donations are welcome. Registration is required for each weekly program and space is limited.
