The ice rink is located in Grantsville Town Park near the Ruth Enlow Library. All sessions are limited on the number of participants so JTF1 encourages you to buy your admissions in advance but drop-ins are also welcome. Public skates are limited to scheduled times. RENTALS The Ice Rink has skates for all sizes, helmets, and skate aids for rent. Skates are $2, helmets are $1, and skate aids are $2. Skate aids are only available for children under 48 inches in height. You can bring your own bike helmet. Helmets are not required but encouraged, especially for beginners. Additionally, if you are renting skates, you are required to wear socks. Please wear full-length socks - footies, ankle socks, etc. are not appropriate to protect your skin in skates. The Opening day for the 2023-24 Ski Season is Friday, December 15th! Maryland’s only ski resort opens with skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing! Our Snowmaking Team was well prepared for the cold snaps that presented us with solid periods for good snow production. Even though we had some mild weather and precipitation this month, the additional natural snow of the 11.5″ season to date has helped to establish a solid base and create excitement within our staff, community, and patrons. Wisp plans to open with seven trails and a terrain park including Squirrel Cage, Sunset Blvd., Happy Camper, Possum, Grouse Way, Boulder Run, and Central Park Terrain Park. Opening weekend hours: Friday, December 15 with skiing and snowboarding from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM, in addition to Snow Tubing from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM. The Garrett County Health Department is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive on Friday, December 15, from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM at the Health Department’s office at 1025 Memorial Drive in Oakland. “Giving blood is a meaningful way to show up for your community and make wishes come true this holiday season,” A Red Cross spokesperson said. “Schedule your blood, platelet, or plasma donation appointment today.” Donors are urged to schedule an appointment now by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-733-2767, or calling Sandy at the health department at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111. Participants who give blood from December 1-17 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email. To donate blood, a person must be healthy, weigh at least 110 pounds, be at least 17 years old, (or 16 years old with a parental consent form), and have not donated blood in the last 56 days. Volunteers from Garrett County Law Enforcement agencies, along with the Garrett County Department of Social Services and members of AmeriCorps have partnered together for the annual Police Providing Presents event to benefit local children. This nationwide event may be called different names, but the event's meaning stays the same. The event provides selected Garrett County children the opportunity to be paired with members from the Maryland State Police, Garrett County Sheriff's Office, Oakland City Police, Maryland Natural Resource Police, and the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office who will spend time together as partners for the day. The event provides the opportunity for children to go shopping with a police officer in order to purchase presents for their family and themselves, attend a luncheon, enjoy games and activities, and have their presents wrapped by volunteers. The annual Police Providing Presents event is scheduled for Saturday, December 16, 2023. The program serves Garrett County children and is supported by donations. We are graciously asking for donations from those who would like to support this program.
