Join the community for a fun night on March 20, 2024, from 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM for the kids and an educational night for parents at the Grantsville Elementary PTO. The Garrett County Health Department and the Town of Grantsville are bringing the community the educational tools and resources needed to aid in drug and alcohol prevention in our community! The Garrett County Health Department has scheduled a tobacco treatment class to begin on April 3rd. The class is one hour long from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM and consists of a series of four in-person group sessions, one each week, and then two follow-up phone sessions for a total of six weeks. These sessions will help you learn how to change your habits. Participants receive many resources, including a class notebook, group support from others who are also trying to quit, and free cessation aids in the form of nicotine patches, gum, lozenge, or the prescription drugs Zyban or Chantix. “The class is free for you and designed to help you stop using all types of tobacco, including cigarettes, smokeless, and electronic smoking devices,” said Chelsie Dever, Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist at the Garrett County Health Department. “The support received from the other participants in the group who are also attempting to quit using tobacco really helps participants to stay focused on their goal.” To register for the class, go to KickingTobacco.com. The event will take place from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC) at Garrett College in McHenry. The Garrett County Family Fun Festival will be held in conjunction with the Health Fair to celebrate the “Week of the Young Child,” which is from April 6 to April 12 this year. “Week of a Young Child” is recognized across the country to celebrate the importance of early childhood development. The Family Fun Festival promotes positive early childhood learning experiences and recognizes that these experiences are essential in laying the foundation for success in academics and throughout life. PLEASE SIGN UP AND SIGN THE WAIVER IN ADVANCE! We will ride the awesome Dan's Mountain Lonconia loop at a casual/moderate pace. The ride is for intermediate‐level riders looking to apply and improve their skills in a non‐competitive atmosphere. We will ride about 5 miles of intermediate-level terrain (about one loop), with some uphills and fun downhill-flowy sections. Then, depending on the group's appetite, we can go for another lap. There will be obstacles that require the rider to get their front wheel off the ground to clear successfully. Basic mountain biking skills are required. Short, steep climbs and descents may be encountered. More fit entry-level riders can successfully ride this intermediate trail. While still “casual” in nature, this pace will have fewer stops than a beginner ride along the way. Riders with average fitness should do fine on this level of ride.
