Battle of the Books Unites Readers of Two Counties

Students of Garrett and Allegany County Public Schools gathered on the evening of March 25 at Frostburg State University’s Children’s Literature Centre for the first-ever Battle of the Books held in Western Maryland.  Teams of 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students dressed up in custom T-shirts or coordinated costumes and competed in a trivia contest that tested their knowledge of the ten books for each grade they had been reading over the last several months.  Winning teams carried away custom 3D printed trophies for the honor of their schools, and Amazon gift cards contributed by Allegany County Library System for each member of their team, and all who showed up enjoyed pizza provided by the Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library.

“What a way to showcase great books and the people that love them!” said Thomas Vose, Director of the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County.  “This was an incredibly fun and energizing event, and it’s an honor to work with so many people who care about reading so passionately!”

This event was inspired by Ali Schilpp of Northern Middle School, former national School Librarian of the Year, and represented a partnership between Garrett County Public Schools, Allegany County Public Schools, Allegany County Library System, the Children’s Literature Centre, and the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County.
