According to the Maryland DNR, Walleye fishing at Deep Creek Lake has been excellent this week. Most anglers are casting diving jerkbaits for the walleye, or drifting minnows along steep rocky shorelines. Large yellow perch and smallmouth bass can also be in the mix, especially when drifting minnows.

Fred McMullen, Warning Coordination of the National Weather Service forecast office in Pittsburgh will present County officials with a recognition letter and special StormReady signs during a ceremony at the Garrett County Courthouse Public Meeting Room on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 4:00pm.

The Maryland Water Monitoring Council is holding its 23rd annual Water Quality Conference on December 8th. The conference will include 70 talks and 41 poster presentations on topics as varied as citizen science, climate resilience, community engagement, ocean health and stream restoration. Students are encouraged to attend and there is a networking session.

The Garrett College Adventure Equipment Center at the COAS building above the dorms on campus will be holding a sale on Friday December 1st from 9:00am-12 noon and on Monday December 4th from 9:00am -12 noon. They will be selling used mountain bikes, kayaks, camping gear, sleeping bags and back packs.
The Ruth Enlow Library and Garrett County Family Support Services will co-host a free teen sensory and social event on Saturday, December 2, 10:00am – 11:00am, at the Oakland Library, 6 N. As entrepreneurs, we are bummed to hear of the closing of a few local enterprises: Top Chefs in Oakland has closed (Note: Don Champion’s catering business is still open), Telli’s Deli in McHenry closed a few weeks ago, and we just heard Mountain Postal will be closing their McHenry (only) location (not the ones in Grantsville or Oakland) at the end of December.
Here’s something a little different: Dr. Reza Azad, “one of the leading experts of the Persian Arts on the East Coast,” will be giving a presentation on Persian Arts in America and showing rugs from his private collection at the C. Garrett Regional Medical Center’s Subacute Unit won its fourth consecutive Best Nursing Home award from US News & World Report. The annual award requires the facility to meet certain performance standards consistently throughout the 12 month period.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM education is really a focal point in today’s educational and career arenas. If you add-in the Arts, you make STEAM, which is really hot! STEAM education and experiences meld the sciences with the arts, artisanship and the maker movement. Ruth Enlow Library has three STEM/STEAM programs scheduled throughout the County today.
We hope you had a great long weekend, as we know a number of local organizations were closed, or employees took off on Friday, for a nice four-day weekend. Lots of folks went to the Festival of Trees on Friday and Saturday. Here’s a photo of the tree donated to the Festival by Melissa and the team at Ace’s Run. Those folks do great work!
Speaking of weekends, Caroline Blizzard of Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery center just announced their December schedule. They will be open Friday- Sunday, every weekend in December with some really nice activities, including a holiday open house on December 2nd. We will post their detailed schedule on Deep Creek Times on Friday in our December edition.
According to the American Automobile Association, Mid-Atlantic, over 45 million Americans and 967,000 Marylanders hit the roads this week for the Thanksgiving holiday and motorists filling up their tanks paid the highest gas prices for the holiday since 2014. From the looks of local shops and restaurants, many folks traveled to the Deep Creek Lake area for the holiday weekend. We hope you had a great visit!
Just add snow! Wisp Resort has announced a few Cyber Monday deals for lift passes and lodging that will be offered for 24 hours only today.
The strong economy and our desirable location seem to be propelling the local real estate market. According to data received from Mike Kennedy of Railey Realty, there were 178 “lake-oriented residential” homes for sale as of November 1st. There were also 208 homes sold year-to-date through October with an average sales price of $518,695, both on the uptick from prior periods.

We’ll have a sunny black Friday today with highs in the upper 40s. Tomorrow will be cloudy with a chance of rain or maybe snow with a low of 29 degrees and a high of 46 degrees. On Sunday, a chance of snow and temperatures hovering around 30 degrees.

The 10th annual Festival of Trees will be held at the Garrett County Fairgrounds today from 9:00am – 5:00pm and from 9:00am – 4:00pm tomorrow, with entertainment and a live auction to follow into the evening on Saturday. These beautiful Christmas wreaths, trees and other entries are all one-of-a kind and are truly works of art. The event is also a lot of fun – even Santa attends – and the proceeds from the auction benefits the Dove Center.
Saturday is officially Small Business Saturday where we all can help support local entrepreneurs and small businesses for all of your holiday shopping.
There are lots of great small retail businesses worthy of a visit on Saturday: Bear Creek Traders in McHenry (open 9:00am – 7:00pm Saturday) has a great mix of household, clothing, Deep Creek Lake exclusive and other items. Also, at the Lake is Grand Central Home Furnishings offering national furniture brands for a great value. In Grantsville, High Country Creamery will be open 8:00am – 4:00pm and Penn Alps Craft Shop will be open 11:00am-8:00pm. There are many others all around the County…
Before, during and after shopping, there are a number of great locally-owned eating and drinking establishments, including: Smiley’s Bar and Grill, Brenda’s Pizzeria, MoonShadow, Ace’s Run, Trader’s Coffee House, Harvest Moon Market and others…
And don’t forget downtown Oakland and all they have to offer. The Gallery Shop, operated by the Garrett County Arts Council, will be celebrating its first anniversary at the new location on 2nd street. Ho! Ho! Ho! Beginning November 26th Santa will place his special mailbox in the Garrett Regional Medical Center hospital lobby. He will have letters there ready for children to write a message on to him. Place the letter in Santa’s special box. Children will receive a personal response from Santa. Please include a full return address to make sure Santa’s response can find your child.

Garrett Regional Medical Center’s Subacute Unit won its fourth consecutive Best Nursing Home award from US News & World Report, Mark Boucot, the hospital’s president and chief executive officer, announced this week. The hospital received a five star rating.
The annual award, given to nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities throughout the United States, is based on data provided by Nursing Home Compare, a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS is a federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing home facilities. Data considered in the methodology used by US News to determine nursing home performance is measured over the course of the year, with facilities required to meet certain performance standards consistently throughout the 12 month period.
Winning the award means Garrett Regional Medical Center is included in the US News & World Report’s Nursing Home Finder as a “Top Performer;” of the 224 nursing home facilities in the state of Maryland, only 38 achieved the Top Performer rating.
“We’re both pleased and proud that our Subacute Unit has once again been recognized for the quality of the care we provide our patients,” stated Mr. Boucot. “The mission of our hospital is to treat every patient like a member of our own family, and the care and compassion our Subacute staff gives their patients every day really reflects that. The staff does an amazing job helping people reach their healthiest potential. I’m very pleased their hard work and dedication is being recognized nationally.”
The hospital’s Subacute Unit offers rehabilitation services for patients who have been in acute care and are in need of therapy to prepare them for discharge. Therapies provided in the unit include physical and occupational therapies, speech therapy, and long term antibiotic therapy. The patients in Subacute range from those who have had a colostomy and must learn how to address their condition to surgery patients who need to gain strength and stamina in order to return home safely.
“We offer patients short term therapy that is aimed at getting them to their highest level of functioning so they can make a smooth transition either back home or to a long term care facility,” says Lori Davis, RN, Director of the Subacute Unit. “We work with patients who have had total knee or hip replacements, patients who have suffered a stroke, and we also teach diabetic patients how to monitor their condition and perform finger sticks and insulin injections. We work with a wide variety of conditions, and seeing people improve throughout their stay is one of the best things about working here. It’s very gratifying.”
Typically, patients receive rehab services in the Subacute Unit for anywhere from eight days to two weeks, Ms. Davis notes.
US News & World Report evaluated over 15,000 nursing homes and facilities throughout the country in determining which facilities provide outstanding care. This year, a little over 2,000 facilities earned the ranking as a Best Nursing Home. Garrett Regional Medical Center, which won five stars in each of the four years it has won the coveted award, is currently one of eight nursing home facilities in the state of Maryland that holds a total of 20 stars.

Just received word that tickets are now on sale for what is billed as the world’s largest outdoor show. I know we have a number of hunters, fishermen, boaters and outdoors enthusiasts so thought I would share. Its runs from February 3rd through the 11th in Harrisburg PA.
Speaking of outdoorsy stuff, New Germany State Park will be hosting their Free Hunter Education Field Day Workshop on December 11th from 10:00am – 2:00pm at the Lake House. Must be 13 and have completed the Maryland Hunter Education Course.
Don’t forget to save your turkey necks and giblets for tasty treats for the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center Aviary birds! They must be uncooked and from a reputable supplier. You can freeze them and drop them off at the main office or anytime Friday-Sundays 10-4. They love them and it is good for their beaks and well being!

Just in time for holiday shopping the Loar Gift Shop at the Garrett Regional Medical Center is holding its famous everything $6.00 sale today until 4pm. Jewelry, scarves, gloves, rings, socks, leggings and much more. Plus, the event benefits the patients, staff and guests of GRMC because all proceeds are used by the Loar Auxiliary to purchase medical equipment.
Our Oakland Walmart is offering bags full of “All the Sides You Need” for a Thanksgiving meal. For every bag you purchase (up to 20 bags) Oakland Walmart will donate a matching bag to a local church or food pantry.
Congratulations to the Garrett College Lakers men’s basketball team. They swept their two David K. Martin Classic contests over the weekend to remain undefeated and nationally ranked in NJCAA DII play!
The Ruth Enlow Library announced yesterday that it has added Hoopla Digital – a unique digital entertainment/media service – to its online resources for patrons. This service provides thousands of movies, television shows, music albums, eBooks, audiobooks, comics, and graphic novels – all available for mobile and online access with a valid library card. While Thanksgiving as an expression of gratitude for divine blessings dates back to the 1530s, it was Abe Lincoln that fixed the date on the calendar in 1863. He decreed that it be on the final Thursday of November, which FDR changed to the third Thursday, until critics forced him to move it back to the fourth in 1942 — a great factoid to impress your dinner guests on Thursday!

The Lucky Elf promotion is a Christmas promotion that is in effect from November 26-December 17. We have 16 donated gift certificates from local businesses. For every $25 spent in a participating store (one displaying this pictured elf), the customer will receive one card that they can fill out and drop into a number of collection sites. Following yesterday’s snowy, blustery day, the weather for today will be mostly sunny with highs around 40. It will be a little windy at times with gusts up to 35mph this morning.
The snow plan for Garrett County went into effect last night at 8:30pm for the entire county.

Your intrepid blogger/researcher finds that there are about 3.04 trillion trees on the planet as indicated by a 2015 research study. That’s over 400 living trees for every human on earth, and the ratio is probably higher in Garrett County!
According to the Garrett County Chamber, The National Defense Authorization Act of 2018 (NDAA) has recently passed both the House and the Senate and is on its way to the President’s desk. The NDAA includes important changes to the HUBZone program such as a freeze on HUBZone maps until January 1, 2020 and a 5-year map update transition after 2020. Several Garrett County businesses currently rely on the HUBZone program.

The Dove Center is hiring a part-time (16-20 hours/week) Crisis Advocate to work directly with clients staying in the domestic violence shelter, and to answer hotline calls. MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD. AA degree in human services related field preferred; intensive training will be provided. Must be very flexible, and able to work various shifts (midnight-8 am, 8 am-4 pm, and 4pm-midnight), weekends, and some holidays. It is crucial that the individual hired is very reliable, as the shelter must be covered 24/7. Speaking of the weather, AccuWeather yesterday issued a forecast for cold weather that could possibly disrupt travel to the Midwest and Northeast around Thanksgiving. Still early, but if you are traveling you may want to check it out and track developments.

The Garrett County Concert Band is presenting “A Christmas Flourish” on Sunday, December 3 at 2:30pm in the Garrett College Auditorium. Band members range in age from 11 to 80 years old and come from four states! It is sure to be a great show.
Significant project improvements along the Western Maryland Rail Trail will force temporary closures (with detours) along sections of the trail between Nov. 27, 2017 and Jan. 27, 2018. This two-phase project will clean ditch lines and replace damaged guardrails and fencing along the trail.
Epilepsy is a disease that can impact anyone here in Garrett County. With November being National Epilepsy Awareness month, I thought I would post this link to the “Take a Shot” at Epilepsy campaign that is in progress.

Congratulations to the 19 new Maryland Park Service Rangers that graduated Nov. 10 from Maryland Park Service Ranger School, which took place at New Germany State Park in Garrett County.
Speaking of the great outdoors in Garrett County, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced yesterday that it is continuing the Canada goose hunt on Deep Creek Lake and waterfowl hunt at Broadford Lake. Reservations are being taken for November 20-22.

The Grantsville Lions Club held their 56th Anniversary Charter Night at Grace Community Church in Grantsville. The speaker was Second Vice District Governor Lenny Gares. Perfect attendance awards were presented and several yearly awards from Lions Clubs International were presented. New member, Jeremy Layman was officially inducted by First Vice District Governor Gerry Beachy. Membership in Lions is by invitation and Lion Jeremy’s sponsor was Lion Duane Stein, II.
The Grantsville Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization having over 46,000 clubs and over 1.4 million members in over 200 countries around the world. Lions Clubs are unique, supporting sight programs, assisting the disabled, feeding the hungry and providing disaster relief assistance. Grantsville Lions have projects and activities in the community that include sponsoring a circus in May, coordinating the annual Grantsville Days celebration the last weekend in June and raising money through their chicken BBQ’s, kettle corn sales and car raffle ticket sales. All money raised is given back to the community in the form of scholarships for Northern High School graduates, eye examinations and glasses for the needy, and monetary support for many organizations including the Maryland Eye Bank (Keralink), Lions Camp Merrick diabetes camp, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Lions Vision Research at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), and the Town of Grantsville for the Grantsville Park. LCIF gives grants to worthy Lion projects and provides disaster relief grants around the world. The Grantsville Lions were instrumental in developing the Grantsville Park by securing Project Open Space grants and providing volunteer help. The Park now has 2 ballfields, a basketball, tennis and volleyball court, 3 pavilions, 2 playgrounds and a recreational pond. Pavilions can be rented by contacting the Town of Grantsville at 301-895-3144.
The Grantsville Lions are a volunteer organization presently with 41 members meeting on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. Membership in the organization is by invitation.
