World Environment Day

Today, June 5, 2025, marks World Environment Day, a global initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to promote environmental awareness and action. This year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” highlighting the urgent need to address the growing crisis of plastic waste that threatens ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.

County United Way has received $119,954 in grant funding from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield to support the Nourishing Neighbors Program in Western Maryland—part of a $7.1 million effort to fight diabetes.

Garrett County was honored with the 2025 MEDA Small Community Economic Development Marketing Initiative Award for its “Make It. In The Mountains” campaign! This initiative celebrates the benefits of building a business and life in the Appalachian region and was created in partnership with Allegany County, ARC, and the Maryland Department of Commerce.

Applications for Garrett County’s FY 2025 Small Business and Agriculture Marketing Grant are now closed. Updates on FY 2026 will be shared on the Business Development website and social media.

Garrett County’s first attainable housing project in Grantsville is still accepting applications. The 63 homes are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with mortgage qualification required. First-time homebuyer assistance is available.
