    The Oakland Writers’ & Literature (OWL) Club is a group of 18 years and older writing enthusiasts, tackling a common feeling among writers, the need for some encouragement to write. The focus of OWL is to provide a community for writers to share and workshop their own work, and sometimes the work of published authors. The group uses tools of analysis to identify the literal meanings and themes of all genres of writing, while also discussing the things that most stand out in the work. The OWL club meets Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at the Main (Oakland) Library, and is an open community where writers can pop in and pop out from week to week and always feel included and welcome when they return. Writings/readings are scheduled in advance of meetings using OWL's community sign-up sheet. The OWL mailing list* is used for distributing this work. Meetings also include weekly writing prompts that attendees are encouraged (though not required) to read and share with the group.   • Summer Fun Day: Obstacle Course

    Kids of all ages can join us anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Summer Fun Days for games and activities that will be set up in the meeting room. Preregistration is not available, but please sign-in at the information desk when you arrive. Play time may be limited to 30 minutes if the room reaches capacity and others are waiting to join. Parent supervision is required since library staff may not always be present. Today’s activity is an obstacle course that will challenge your balance and agility with a low ropes course, wobble stones, balance beam, and hurdles. Contestants are challenged to tell the difference between a REAL dinosaur name and one that Mr. Mike made up.     In this hands-on workshop taught by members of the Mountain Laurel Garden Club, kids will learn all about the basics of gardening for both food and fun! Attendees will explore the different stages of plant cultivation, from seeding and weeding to fertilizing and culling, while discussing topics like composting, sun/shade, and more!
