Great Strides will be sponsoring their second annual “Making Strides to Support Cancer Patients” walk to support Cindy’s Fund on Sunday, May 15, at the Oakland town pavilion. Registration will begin at noon and the walk will begin at 1:00 p.m. Walkers can choose between a one, two or three mile walk. This is a non-competitive walk. There will be food vendors available at 11:30 a.m. Walkers are asked to bring lawn chairs, have lunch and enjoy the music provided by WKHJ and their live remote. All proceeds benefit Cindy’s Fund, a local non-profit organization that assists people in Garrett County with their cancer expenses.
New this year will be a bike ride under the direction of Pat Hudnall of the Vagabond Taproom. Bikers will be grouped according to their ability, with different routes being taken. Bikers will meet at the town pavilion and depart at 1:00 p.m. Helmets are required to ride. Registration forms must be completed and the cost will be the same as the walk.
Started in January 2021, by Sue Newton and Gale Bosley, Great Strides offers an opportunity for people to walk and get healthy. Having a membership of over 500 members, the group offers a walk every day of the week. In nice weather, there are two walks a day (morning and evening), three days of the week. Walks during the week take place in the Oakland area. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, they explore other areas of Garrett County and surrounding locations. With so many beautiful walking trails, this offers people the opportunity to explore new areas. Great Strides can be found on Facebook. To join, simply hit the “invite” button. Join them in “walking for fitness, walking for fun”!
Registration forms for the walk can be picked up at Gregg’s Pharmacy, Green Acres Garden Center, and Zip’eez. Bike riders can pick up registration forms at the Vagabond Taproom. Pat Hudnall will be happy to answer questions about the bike ride when registration forms are picked up.
