GCPS Hosts MD Teacher of the Year Retreat at Deep Creek Lake, MD

From May 8th to May 10th, Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) hosted the Maryland Teacher of the Year Retreat. This event recognized the hard work and dedication of teachers across the state and allowed them to connect, collaborate, and learn from each other’s experiences. This included the GCPS Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Ali Schilpp, Media Specialist at Northern Garrett Middle School.

The three-day retreat was packed with exciting activities and events, including a tour of the Hickory Environmental Center and a lesson with students at the Northern Middle School Library featuring John Schu. Attendees were also treated to lunches at Caddyshack and Cornucopia Cafe, as well as dinners at Dutch’s at Silver Tree and Mountain State Brewing Company Deep Creek.

One of the highlights of the retreat was a visit from John Schu, a renowned librarian and writer. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit the Artisan Village/Casselman and Cornucopia Cafe.

“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to host this event and to showcase the beauty and hospitality of Garrett County,” said Dr. Nicole Miller, Chief Academic Officer of Garrett County Public Schools. “The teachers who attended this retreat are truly inspiring, and we are proud to be part of a community that values education and supports our educators.”
