Garrett College has received state approval to launch five programs, each tailored to a specific target market.
The College will begin offering the programs – a retooled degree in Professional & Technical Studies and a new degree in Health & Exercise Science, as well as certificates in Addictions Counseling, Health Science, and Engineering, Robotics & Technology – next fall.
“We’re excited to be offering these new programs, each of which meets the needs of a specific student group,” said Christa Bowser, GC’s chief academic officer.
The Professional & Technical Studies Associate of Applied Science is aimed at individuals with existing licensure or certification as well as working professionals who can earn credit for recently completed certifications.
“The program has been designed to be more flexible and is no longer machining-specific,” explained Julie Yoder, dean of continuing education and workforce development. “The redesign allows students to fulfill the program’s technical portion through a combination of career or technical courses that meet their personal career goals.”
Yoder said students starting a new career path may choose to enroll in skills-based coursework. She said individuals with existing certifications and documented technical proficiencies can earn credit for an already completed licensure or certification such as HVAC, welding, machining, or certified nurse assistant.
The Health & Exercise Science Associate of Science degree permits students to gain a strong core of basic health and exercise science knowledge. Students take courses in diverse areas that include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, resistance training, and group fitness.
“The program provides students interested in a fitness or health science career the knowledge and skills necessary for today’s competitive market,” said Bowser, adding that the Health Science Certificate provides students with an academic foundation that prepares them for transfer into a specialized health program.
The Addictions Counseling Certificate is directed towards credentialled professionals seeking coursework specific to Certified Supervised Counselor-Alcohol and Drug (CSC-AD) certification.
“This certificate provides individuals who already hold an associate degree, or higher, with the specific coursework needed to seek licensure and certification with the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists,” said Bowser. She noted that individuals need an associate degree in a health or human services field to sit for the CSC-AD exams in Maryland.
The Engineering, Robotics & Technology certificate is being offered exclusively to Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) students.
