The Oakland Writers’ & Literature (OWL) Club is a group of 18 years and older writing enthusiasts, tackling a common feeling among writers, the need for some encouragement to write. The focus of OWL is to provide a community for writers to share and workshop their own work, and sometimes the work of published authors. The group uses tools of analysis to identify the literal meanings and themes of all genres of writing, while also discussing the things that most stand out in the work. The OWL club meets Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at the Main (Oakland) Library, and is an open community where writers can pop in and pop out from week to week and always feel included and welcome when they return. Writings/readings are scheduled in advance of meetings using OWL's community sign-up sheet. The OWL mailing list* is used for distributing this work. Meetings also include weekly writing prompts that attendees are encouraged (though not required) to read and share with the group. Garrett Regional Medical Center will be offering wellness blood screenings for community members on June 5, 12, and 19 from 6:00 AM until 9:00 AM at 375 Pythian Avenue in Oakland by appointment only. An additional blood screening will be held on June 17 at Grantsville Medical Center in Grantsville from 6:00 AM until 9:00 AM. The blood screening will be $70. Accepted payments include cash or check made payable to GRMC. The multi-phasic blood screening includes iron, glucose, bun, creatinine, sodium, potassium, chloride, C02, uric acid, calcium, phosphorous, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, AST, ALT, alkaline, phosphatase, VLDL cholesterol, estimated GFR, TSH, WBC, RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, platelets, MPV, neutrophils, lymphocyte, monocytes, eosinophil, and basophil. Accident Library invites you to join their needlework sewing circle! They meet every Saturday morning at 9:30 AM. Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Scheduled workshops are February 2 & 23, April 6 & 20, June 1 & 15, August 3 & 10, and October 5 & 19. All sessions begin at 1:00 PM for approximately three hours each at Community Action's Oakland offices, led by Nick Fratz-Orr of Railey Realty, Amanda Lewis of Healy Insurance Group, and April Jones of First United Bank & Trust. Attendance at both classes is required to earn HUD-approved Home Buyer Certification, which qualifies the prospective buyer for Garrett County government's Pathway to Homeownership grant for up to $6,875 toward down-payment or closing costs, valid for 5 years.
