The Garrett County Board of Education will hold a Special Business Session on Thursday, September 26, 2024, to discuss the FY2024 Financial Statements and Single Audit Results. The meeting will be held at Dennett Road Educational Complex in the Community Room. The meeting is open to the public but will also be live-streamed for public review. The Special Business Session will begin at 4:00 PM. Public comment will be received at the beginning of the meeting prior to the audit presentations. The Board reserves the right to go into closed session if needed pursuant to the General Provision §3-305 of the State Government Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

The Garrett County Health Department has scheduled a tobacco treatment class to begin on September 5th. The class is one hour long, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, and consists of four in-person group sessions, one each week, and two follow-up phone sessions for a total of six weeks. These sessions will help you learn how to change your habits. Participants receive many resources, including a class notebook, group support from others who are also trying to quit, and free cessation aids in the form of nicotine patches, gum, lozenge, or the prescription drugs Zyban or Chantix. “The class is free and designed to help you stop using all types of tobacco, including cigarettes, smokeless, and electronic smoking devices,” said Chelsie Dever, Director of Health Education & Outreach, adding “the support received from the other participants in the group who are also attempting to quit using tobacco really helps participants to stay focused on their goal.” To register for the class, go to www.KickingTobacco.com. In honor of National Public Lands Day, Garrett Trails will be teaming up with the Friends of New Germany State Park to host a trail work day on September 28. Volunteers are needed to shovel stone dust and help with other tasks. Please come prepared for physically demanding work and bring your own drinking water. The work day will conclude with food and drinks at noon, courtesy of the Friends of New Germany.

Join Sang Run State Park Volunteers for the perfect fall day! We will have delicious food from our gardens, and warm drinks for purchase. Help them make apple butter over the fire and take your turn and press apples for fresh cider! Crafts will feature some of Sang Run's fall favorites! The Grantsville Rotary Club will be having a day of bingo, fun, and prizes. The Event will take place at the Grantsville American Legion - Post 214, 108 Miller S., Grantsville, MD, on September 28, 2024. This event is a fundraising event for the Club, and the proceeds will be used for the Grantsville Rotary Club's Community Projects. The doors will open at 12:00 noon and the games will start at 1:00 PM. The Club is looking for Bingo Boosters to help defray the costs of the bingo event. They will be purchasing any supplies needed to hold the event, and they may need to purchase door prizes, or items for a Chinese Auction that will be in conjunction with this event. The Latin Ballet of Virginia (LBV) was founded in 1997 in Richmond, Virginia under the direction of Ana Ines King, a native of Colombia. LBV is a professional dance company and school of dance, providing multicultural dance programs, instruction, and performances for a diverse community. The Company is Central Virginia’s pre-eminent Hispanic dance company, performing throughout the State and at select venues in North and South America. It was incorporated as a 501(c) 3 organization in 2000. LBV offers a wide variety of weekly classes in 2 dance schools taught by 13 faculty members. Over the years, LBV has built a company of 11 professional dancers from around the world, featuring 6 professional musicians, and mentoring 25 apprentice dancers. LBV enrolls approximately 400 students of all ages per year, conducts 5 professional dance productions annually, supports 85 long-term residencies and 120 short residencies, and presents master classes and lecture demonstrations.
