The Oakland B&O Museum will be part of a Great Small Town Christmas this year on Saturday, December 9th, and Saturday, December 16th from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the Oakland A&E District. This is for children ages 4-9. The event is free, but donations are always appreciated. The children are invited to come in their pajamas or their Christmas best for photos with Santa Claus. They will take part in a craft, have cookies, and get to see Santa. There is limited space for this event. Please call Nicole McCullough at 301-334-2691 to make a reservation. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. The parents are invited to tour the station and enjoy some treats for themselves while their children are in the North Pole (classroom). This will be an experience your child will never forget!!!

The ice rink is located in Grantsville Town Park near the Ruth Enlow Library. All sessions are limited on the number of participants so JTF1 encourages you to buy your admissions in advance but drop-ins are also welcome. Public skates are limited to scheduled times. Please see the schedule below to plan your visit. Follow us on Facebook (JTF1 or jointtrainingfacility1) to get the most up-to-date schedule. RENTALS The Ice Rink has skates for all sizes, helmets, and skate aids for rent. Skates are $2, helmets are $1, and skate aids are $2. Skate aids are only available for children under 48 inches in height. You can bring your own bike helmet. Helmets are not required but encouraged, especially for beginners. Additionally, if you are renting skates, you are required to wear socks. Please wear full-length socks - footies, ankle socks, etc. are not appropriate to protect your skin in skates. SKATE SESSIONS AND PRIVATE RENTALS JTF will hold multiple Public Skate Sessions which are $5 per skater plus skate rental. Additionally, we have two special sessions. Bob is a known commodity in the music scene around here. Playing music for as long as he can remember, he is skilled in several instruments and has been a pillar of the bluegrass and Americana community. This Sunday will be absolutely stunning solo showcase of his hammered dulcimer skills. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the hammered dulcimer….. The hammered dulcimer (also called the hammer dulcimer) is a percussion–stringed instrument which consists of strings typically stretched over a trapezoidal resonant sound board. The hammered dulcimer is set before the musician, who in more traditional styles may sit cross-legged on the floor, or in a more modern style may stand or sit at a wooden support with legs. The player holds a small spoon-shaped mallet hammer in each hand to strike the strings. The Graeco-Roman dulcimer (“sweet song”) derives from the Latin dulcis (sweet) and the Greek melos (song). The dulcimer, in which the strings are beaten with small hammers, originated from the psaltery, in which the strings are plucked.

Garrett Choral Society’s Annual Christmas Concert “Repeat the Sounding Joy”

The Garrett Choral Society will present its annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 17th at 3pm. In the first half of "Repeat the Sounding Joy", listeners will be treated to favorite carols such as O Little Town of Bethlehem, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Mary Did You Know? Two original compositions by Dr. Sean Beachy will also be included. The second half of the concert features Vivaldi's Gloria. A string ensemble will accompany selected works in addition to piano accompaniment. The performance will be held in the Offutt Theatre at Garrett College's Performing Arts Center.  Tickets are available at The Gallery Shop in Oakland (10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Wednesday thru' Saturday), online at www.GarrettArts.org and at the door.  Admission is free for children 5 years and younger.  Adult tickets cost $15 while student tickets cost $5.
