Len Shindel Book Discussion

Join the Grantsville Library on July 21 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM as author Len Shindel discusses his new book The Strike That Changed Maryland’s Wilderness County. Attendees will learn how the strikers held out so long, and how Shindel later led efforts to win a historic road marker to commemorate the event. Len Shindel began working at Bethlehem Steel’s Sparrows Point Plant in 1973, where he was a union activist and elected representative in local unions of the United Steelworkers. He frequently published newsletters about issues confronting his co-workers. His nonfiction and poetry have been featured in numerous publications. After leaving Sparrows Point in 2002 after Bethlehem’s bankruptcy, Shindel, a father of three and grandfather of seven, began working as a communication specialist for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in Washington, D.C. The International Labor Communications Association frequently awarded his writing. He retired from the IBEW in 2014 and moved to Garrett County. After relocating, Shindel led efforts to win a state historic road marker commemorating the Garrett County Road Workers Strike of 1970. Blind Camping Program

During the summer, visually impaired students and their families are invited to spend a few days experiencing the many recreation options available in the Deep Creek Lake area. Club members and volunteers set up tents for the students at The Lions Club Park on Bumble Bee Road. Days are typically spent tubing and kayaking on the lake, four-wheeling on local trails, with evening barbecues and marshmallows roasting by the fire. The Deep Creek Lake Lions Club is always looking for volunteers to assist with the program—camping is not required. Those interested can contact the club to learn more about getting involved in this inspiring initiative.

2025 Climbing & Caving Road Trip (Ages 14-16)

Dates: July 21–25, 2025 Times: 9:00 AM Monday until 5:00 PM Friday (4 overnights) Cost: $725 General Information: The CAOS Climbing and Caving Road Trip for 14–16-year-old campers is designed to introduce and reinforce basic skills related to rock climbing, caving, and campcraft, with a focus on personal responsibility and group interaction. The camp is facilitated by the faculty, staff, and students of the Garrett College Center for Adventure & Outdoor Studies. All campers will participate in camp-related chores such as cooking, cleaning, and camp setup. The road trip begins at the Garrett College Community Aquatics & Recreation Complex (CARC) at 9:00 AM on Monday morning. Over the next few days, the group will travel in Garrett College vehicles from Garrett College to Coopers Rock, West Virginia, and then to the Seneca Rocks/Spruce Knob National Recreation Area in West Virginia. Among other things, participants will learn about equipment, paddle strokes, and river dynamics. Monday–Wednesday, participants will meet with the camp instructors at the Garrett College Community Aquatics & Recreation Complex (CARC) at 9:00 AM.
