    Garrett County Community Action announces 2026 dates for its popular Homeownership Education & Finance Class. The free workshops cover every essential step of the homebuying process, from selecting a realtor, identifying insurance, and navigating financing, with topics such as credit analysis, lender underwriting criteria, and much more, all designed to equip future homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Scheduled workshops are February 2 & 23, April 6 & 20, June 1 & 15, August 3 & 10, and October 5 & 19. All sessions begin at 1:00 PM for approximately three hours each at Community Action's Oakland offices, led by Nick Fratz-Orr of Railey Realty, Amanda Lewis of Healy Insurance Group, and April Jones of First United Bank & Trust. Attendance at both classes is required to earn HUD-approved Home Buyer Certification, which qualifies the prospective buyer for Garrett County government's Pathway to Homeownership grant for up to $6,875 toward down-payment or closing costs, valid for 5 years. Participants will also have the chance to judge classes of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
