Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be available at the Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad in Oakland on May 1st from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM to provide free Car Seat Checks to the public. Technicians will complete a checklist and assist parents and caregivers to learn how to install their child’s car seat. “We are excited to have this opportunity available!” said Maria Friend, Early Care Programs Director, “All parents can benefit from professional installation assistance to be sure their child’s car seat is properly installed!” Appointments are preferred. Join Friendsville Library on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6:00 PM. Each participant will choose a recipe from a selection of cookbooks to prepare at home and bring to share at the next meeting. We'll have fun trying new foods, discussing our culinary successes (or disasters), and sharing cooking techniques and tips. Maryland Public Television and the Maryland Genealogical Society offer another beginner-to-intermediate genealogy workshop series, coming this spring. Finding Your Roots Online will consist of four (4) two-hour sessions focused on the online resources individuals can search to find more information about their ancestors. Each session will feature a combination of lecture, small and large group discussion, question and answer time, and a homework assignment relating to your family search. Handouts will be provided for each session. The webinars will be recorded and registrants can view the sessions later; however, because this workshop is interactive, we encourage all registrants to attend the live virtual sessions whenever possible. This series is perfect for anyone looking to better understand the vast offerings of online family research. Your family does not need Maryland ties to benefit from this course; however, the instructor will use some Maryland examples. Energy Island is in danger of becoming unplugged forever! Now it's in the hands of the next generation — The Power Protectors — to save it! Youth will learn about renewable energy and apply this knowledge to analyze and assess their own energy use. They’ll design a Solar Bug using their imagination and critical thinking skills to protect the island from being unplugged. This program is a part of Ruth Enlow Library's Student Discovery Series. Hey friends, we're offering womens+ casual group trail / MTB bike rides!! All abilities are welcome! Join us on Thursdays: Meet at 5:15 PM, wheels down at 5:30 PM. Return by 7:15 PM. The ladies will ride a portion of the trails at Broadford Lake Park as a chance to meet other bike riders (or want-to-be riders) stopping periodically along the way to reinforce skills needed to tackle the trail and to (definitely) take pictures of our bikes and wildflowers. This FREE ride is for beginner‐level riders looking to meet other female riders and improve their skills in a non-competitive atmosphere. We will ride about 3 miles of beginner-level terrain with some small uphill sections and fun-flowy sections. Questions on MTB skills are encouraged, and the intention is to have fun and gain confidence on the trails. The ride is open for all female or female-identifying riders. Garrett Regional Medical Center (GRMC) will be offering a Safe Sitter course on May 4, 2024, from 9:00 AM until 3:30 PM. The class is held in the GRMC hospital boardroom. The Safe Sitter course is designed to prepare those in sixth grade and up to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Participants will get to use manikins to practice important rescue skills. Attendees will also learn first aid and safety, childcare, and business skills. There is a $40 class registration fee and a pre-registration deadline of April 22, 2024. High Mountain Gospel Riders will be participating in the annual Run for the Son ride held on Saturday, May 4th. Registration will be from 9:30 AM -10:30 AM - Kickstands up at 11:00 AM. Registration will be held at the China Wok/Mt. Top Glass Parking lot area. (13227 Garrett Highway, Oakland MD) Ride will go to Seneca Rocks. Prayer at 1:00 PM Lunch following prayer. Bring packed lunch or there's a small store/restaurant across the road. Leaving Seneca Rocks at 2:00 PM to ride back to Oakland.
