The Garrett County Health Department has scheduled a tobacco treatment class to begin on April 3rd. The class is one hour long from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM and consists of a series of four in-person group sessions, one each week, and then two follow-up phone sessions for a total of six weeks. These sessions will help you learn how to change your habits. Participants receive many resources, including a class notebook, group support from others who are also trying to quit, and free cessation aids in the form of nicotine patches, gum, lozenge, or the prescription drugs Zyban or Chantix. “The class is free for you and designed to help you stop using all types of tobacco, including cigarettes, smokeless, and electronic smoking devices,” said Chelsie Dever, Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist at the Garrett County Health Department. “The support received from the other participants in the group who are also attempting to quit using tobacco really helps participants to stay focused on their goal.” To register for the class, go to KickingTobacco.com. If you enjoy cooking, trying new recipes, and eating with friends...then this is the book club for you! It's Friendsville Library's new Culinary Connections Cookbook Club! Join Friendsville Library on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6:00 PM. Each participant will choose a recipe from a selection of cookbooks to prepare at home and bring to share at the next meeting. We'll have fun trying new foods, discussing our culinary successes (or disasters), and sharing cooking techniques and tips. We'll have a different theme each month and a prize will be awarded at each meeting for the tastiest dish! The kickoff meeting is on Wednesday, October 4th. Calling all Allegany and Garrett County, MD, trail recreation enthusiasts! Please join us on April 4th, from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM, at High Mountain Sports for an open house and informal discussion about regional trail interests and infrastructure. Representatives from the Maryland Office of Outdoor Recreation and the International Mountain Bicycling Association will be in attendance to help facilitate the event and engage with stakeholders. A pre-meeting survey has been developed to collect information about community trail use and preferences. The information gathered from the survey and stakeholder engagement meetings may help recreation planners and land managers make more informed decisions about future project development. The Garrett County Steps to Better Health Committee announced that the 2024 Family Fun Festival and Health Fair will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024. The event will take place from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC) at Garrett College in McHenry. The Garrett County Family Fun Festival will be held in conjunction with the Health Fair to celebrate the “Week of the Young Child,” which is from April 6 to April 12 this year. “Week of a Young Child” is recognized across the country to celebrate the importance of early childhood development. The Family Fun Festival promotes positive early childhood learning experiences and recognizes that these experiences are essential in laying the foundation for success in academics and throughout life. The Family Fun Festival and Health Fair is a free community event designed to promote positive experiences in early childhood development and to promote overall health awareness for all ages. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is coordinating another National Drug Take-Back Initiative across the United States on Saturday, April 27, 2024. In addition to the three permanent take-back locations, Garrett County is adding several temporary locations during April highlighting the message, Medication Safety Starts with You. Because of the importance of keeping medications out of the hands of those who could misuse or abuse them, the Garrett County Health Department (GCHD) reminds everyone that the county has three permanent medication drop box locations, including Oakland City Police (Town Hall), Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryland State Police Barracks in McHenry. The drop boxes are available anytime the lobbies are open. Accepted at these locations are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs, but not liquids, syringes and other sharps, or illegal drugs. According to local data reports from GCHD, during the fiscal year 2023, 127 pounds of medications were collected at the drop box locations. Join Ruth Enlow Library for a watch party of the Total Solar Eclipse, at our Main Branch in Oakland on Monday, April 8 at 1:30 PM. The location will be able to view the eclipse at around 92-93% totality. You will be able to do crafts and activities, as well as view a video feed of the eclipse. Some eclipse glasses will be available to share during the watch party.
