Oakland Chapter #67 of the Order of the Eastern Star will host an all-you-can-eat buckwheat cake and full breakfast buffet on Sunday, November 3rd from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Oakland Masonic Lodge. The meal will feature scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, biscuits and sausage gravy, pancakes, French toast, sweet treats, fruit, oatmeal, and of course Nancy’s buckwheat cakes!
The event is open to the public and the cost is a free will offering. All proceeds will go to the Tiny Home Relief Project to aid in the construction of tiny homes for people displaced by Hurricane Helene.
The Tiny Home Relief Project was started by Geoff Tressler, owner of Backbone Tavern in Oakland. When Hurricane Helene hit and he saw the damage in North Carolina, he started out by taking donations to deliver. But he soon realized that there was a more long-term need than just supplies. People had lost their homes and had no way of getting them back. He got the idea of providing tiny homes. He contacted Jason Johnson and Drew Stull of Rough Country Restoration, Barry and B.J. Upole of Above & Beyond LLC, and David Macauley of Deep Creek Construction and within days a bank account was set up and tiny homes were being built.
“Our local Eastern Star Chapter always tries to provide service to our community and those in need,” said Worthy Matron Debbie Raynovich. “Our hearts ached when we saw the devastation that Hurricane Helen caused to the hardest hit areas of North Carolina and we knew we had to do something. By partnering with the Tiny Home Relief Project we can assist in rebuilding lives and provide much-needed relief through compassion and unity here at home.”
