Deep Creek Watershed Foundation Scientific Symposium Overview

On Saturday, October 25th, 2025, the Foundation funded a one-day Scientific Symposium entitled The Deep Creek Watershed: Past Present and Future. A total of about 40 people attended in-person and online. Seven presentations were made by experts on subjects related to the goals of the Deep Creek Watershed Management Plan.

In the morning, Tom Parham, DNR’s representative on the Garrett County Watershed Administrative Council (and pictured here) gave the key-note address entitled, “The State of the Lake – Better understanding Deep Creek Lake’s changing water quality conditions since 2009.”

Bruce Michael, from Garrett County Government, discussed “A Historical Perspective of DCL Sediment Studies and Projects.”

Molly Ramsey, the new Garrett County Watershed Coordinator, presented “The Deep Creek Watershed Management Plan: Progress on our Shared Game Plan.”

Dr. Don Rosenberry, a USGS hydrologist from Denver reported on “Modeling and Monitoring for Deep Creek Watershed Lake Level Releases.”

In the afternoon, the new Deep Creek Lake Manager, Cristina Sanders reviewed “Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Management in Deep Creek Lake.”

Dr. Hannah Patton, Environmental Engineer, Eastern Research Group, Inc. and a new Board Member of the Watershed Foundation discussed, “Wastewater Management and Water Quality in Deep Creek Watershed.”

Tom Parham returned to the podium to discuss “Future Funding for Deep Creek Watershed Management: – Current State funding opportunities for protecting and restoring Deep Creek Lake’s waters.”

The presentations were all well-received and the speakers answered many questions from the audience. A report on the Symposium will be forthcoming.
