Monday, June 10, 2024: The weather today will be sunny. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon–highs in the upper 60s and a low of 46. West winds of around 5 to 10 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. The chance of rain is 20%.

Partners After School participants visited Heartwood Farm in Friendsville, Maryland, to plant hybrid chestnut trees in a future food forest. The farm features pawpaw, black walnut, yellow bud hickory, pear, cherry, and apple trees. Students gathered supplies, carried water from a creek, planted trees, and fed worms to the chickens. They also walked a woodland trail, with one boy naming a giant Catalpa tree as his favorite part of the visit.

As the nation prepares for the 2024 hurricane season, the U.S. Census Bureau will provide crucial information for disaster management. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year.

Garrett County Government has detailed plans for future waste management and landfill capacity, addressing current challenges and future needs. The county is evaluating sustainable and cost-effective waste disposal options.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, but residents of Garrett and Allegany counties are at risk year-round. In 2023, nearly 300 people tested positive for Lyme disease in these counties, with cases occurring every month. The highest number was in August.
