The weather today will be a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Widespread dense fog, mainly before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 69 and a low around 56. East wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

All Garrett County Public Schools and the central office locations will now be closed on Friday, October 15, 2021, as the school system does not have adequate staffing to provide quality instruction and maintain 3-6 feet of physical distance that day. It is not COVID-19 related.

As waters cool in Western Maryland, anglers at Deep Creek Lake are finding many coldwater species adjusting in a favorable way. Species such as smallmouth bass, walleye, and northern pike are moving more freely in a wide variety of water depths. Crappie, yellow perch, and walleye are orienting to deep vertical grass lines and can be targeted with small crankbaits and minnows. Read more in the October 6 DNR fishing report.

As mentioned on Monday, the fall trout stocking program has begun in Western Maryland, and will move eastward and continue for the rest of October. Fall trout stocking presents wonderful opportunities for families to enjoy fun and productive fishing.

On Friday and Saturday this week Wisp Resort is holding its annual Oktoberfest celebration! Join them on October 8 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm and October 9 from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm for artisans, live music, food and beer!

Neighboring Allegany County is holding Artist Studio Tours this Saturday and Sunday. The program takes visitors away from the usual gallery experience to visit artists in their studio environments — Mrs. Sue Arnson from Garrett County is part of this year’s program.
