The weather for today will be sunny with a high near 26 degrees but wind chill values as low as -13.

The Snow Emergency Plan for Garrett County was officially lifted as of 1:30pm yesterday. Some roads are still icy though, so be careful.

Here’s something a little different: It is Senior and Hall of Fame Night at Northern Garrett High School this evening from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Go cheer on our local kids!

REMINDER from Garrett County Public Schools: Yesterday, January 17, was a full day of school for students. The Professional Day has been changed to Tuesday, January 23, with a three hour early dismissal for students.

The Dove Center reports: “we have received funding in the amount of $609,000, from the Maryland Dept. of Housing and Community Development, Community Development Block Grant Homeless Initiative. We will utilize these funds to construct three transitional housing units on the site of our existing facility. These units will provide 6-24 months of temporary housing, with intensive case management, support services, and counseling for individuals escaping domestic violence. This is an expansion of the current emergency shelter services that we currently provide, for which a shelter stay averages 60 days.” CONGRATULATIONS!

Note to parents and grandparents: The Spring semester starts soon at Garrett College and other institutions. One of the “scariest” aspects of the application process is financial aid and the FAFSA form. But it doesn’t have to be too scary with good counseling and more information, such as the US Department of Education site on Federal Student Aid.

The Oakland Rotary Satellite Club is kicking off its 4th Annual Sock Drive on January 15th. Those interested can drop off new children’s socks (and underwear) through February 19th at: Southern Middle School, Trader’s Coffee House, Wildwood Athletic Club, Jazzercise – Oakland, Winner’s Circle, Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland/Grantsville, Gregg’s Pharmacy and Totally Teasin Salon. The donations will go to Garrett County elementary and middle school children in need during the cold winter months.
