Three Join GC Foundation Board

Alvarez, Mead, and Wotring-Nelson are the newest directors

The Garrett College Foundation has added three new members to its Board of Directors.

Katharine Alvarez, Julie Mead, and Elizabeth Wotring-Nelson were all recently elected to the Foundation’s board. The addition of the three new members expands the GCF Board of Directors to 20 members.

“Katie, Julie, and Elizabeth are all wonderful additions to the Foundation’s board,” said Cherie Krug, executive director of the Garrett College Foundation. “All three will bring new perspectives to what is already a very strong board.”

Alvarez is the long-time secretary/treasurer for Alvarez Contractors, Inc., a family-owned, Oakland-based utility construction company. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Towson University and is working toward another degree in accounting from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

“This board appointment is important to me because Garrett College plays a vital role in our community,” said Alvarez. “I feel it is my civic responsibility to help find ways that the Foundation can build connections between the College and the community it serves.”

Mead, a graduate of West Virginia University, has a sales and marketing background, working with the Washington Times and other D.C.-based advertising firms. She moved to Deep Creek more than 15 years ago with her sons and is a real estate agent with Railey Realty, receiving the 2021 Diamond Award in sales volume.

“I look forward to promoting the Garrett College Foundation, helping to achieve goals for future growth while maintaining the College’s wonderful facilities,” said Mead, whose community involvement includes service with Mountain Laurel Garden Club as a director on the Garrett County Board of Realtors, and as a Garrett County Chamber of Commerce diplomat. “We are so fortunate to have this gem in our community.”

Wotring-Nelson, who has a master’s degree in musical theatre from the Boston Conservatory, is a former assistant professor of theatre at Fairmont State University and currently teaches as an adjunct instructor for Garrett College. She was on the board for the theatre on the Lake (TOTL) and has acted in local musical theatre productions for Our Town Theatre, Theatre on the Lake, and Town and Gown Players (Fairmont, WV).

“Having grown up here, I am honored to be a part of the decision-making about how we create opportunities, artistic and otherwise, for the next generation of citizens of the greater Garrett County area,” said Wotring-Nelson.
