The Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County is thrilled to announce that its “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program has reached 100 completions. This milestone comes shortly before the 5th anniversary of the early literacy initiative’s January 2, 2020 kick-off at the library.
“1000 Books Before Kindergarten” is a nationwide program that emphasizes the importance reading plays in the early years of a child’s life. Families are challenged to read at least 1,000 books to their child before the start of their formal education. Any child ages birth to five years can participate. Those who successfully complete the program will have their name engraved on a wooden book and displayed in the library for years to come. “We enjoy interacting with the families as they work toward their goal and celebrating with them upon completion,” says Programming Supervisor Julie Iden.
The simple and enjoyable act of sharing books helps your child learn pre-reading skills such as understanding the sounds letters make, developing a bigger vocabulary, and building background knowledge—all of which help prepare your little one for learning to read and starting kindergarten. Exposure to reading during the 0-5 early critical years is a great way to set your youngster up for later academic success.
