Second-Year Fat Tire Mountain Bike Ride Event a Success

First Organized Ride Event on New Singletrack Trails at Garrett State Forest

The Deep Creek Adventure Bureau (DCAB), a race, ride, run and (fund)raiser event production and promotion company, held its second-year fat tire bike ride event.

On February 25, riders from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia gathered to kick-off the 2023 Garrett County Fat Bike / MTB Ride event at Herrington Manor State Park.

The weather was cold (a low of 19 degrees Fahrenheit) but that didn’t slow down the cohort of riders on fat bikes and mountain bikes. The start was on the beach near the Herrington Manor Lake House on the cross-country ski trails and over to some of Garrett State Forest’s IMBA-designed singletrack for a single lap total of 3 miles.

The top results are below:

  • “SHORT” course (3 miles)
    • Top Finisher: Michael Anderson with a time of 31:01
    • Second Place: Weston McConnell with a time of 33:10
    • Third Place: Wayne Anderson with a time of 35:31
  • “LONG” course (9 miles)
    • Top Finisher: Nathan Aldridge with a time of 41:55
    • Second Place: Darren Bennett with a time of 51:54
    • Third Place: D. Paul Brieten with a time of 55:50
  • “THREE x THREE” (as many 3-mile laps as possible in 3-hour time limit)
    • Top Finisher: Joseph Fraas with 10 laps and a time of 2:54:26
    • Second Place: AJ Delauder with 10 laps and a time of 3:04:02
    • Third Place: Michael Malone with 10 laps and a time of 3:09:08

Special note: the youngest rider was 8-year-old Weston McConnell (finishing in second place in the short course ride) finishing 3 miles of trail with a time of 33:10.

The success of the race can be summed up by Three x Three winner Joe Fraas: “This past weekend proved once again that small grassroots events, like a bike race, will bring people together and provide a local economic impact. We were there for the weekend and visited several Garrett County businesses. Get out and ride!”

DCAB is working to make opportunities for outdoor recreation attainable for those interested in trying a new sport or activity. Whether a person is interested in competition, training, just-for-fun, or camaraderie, everyone is invited to join the DCAB community.

There are also several ways to participate with DCAB such as free group gatherings, low-cost organized rides, and/or as an event volunteer.

“The ride at Herrington Manor State Park is the best way to try something new like fat tire biking, pedaling hard for healther-cise, making new friends, checking out new trails and eating fun snacks,” said Sharon Seling event volunteer and participant. “A perfect pedaling day – cheers to DCAB.”
