Interim Superintendent Named for SY23-24

During the May monthly Board of Education Meeting, Mr. Tom Woods, Board President, provided an update regarding the Interim Superintendent search. This agenda item was changed from an update to a decision and action at the start of the meeting. Mr. Woods indicated that Dr. Brenda McCartney would serve in the interim superintendent position for SY23-24. This is contingent upon the mutual agreement of contract terms and approval from the State Superintendent of Schools.

Dr. McCartney comes from a background of 35 years in the education field, of which 22 years were with GCPS. She obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Frostburg State College (now university) and her Doctorate from the University of Maryland. After that time, she began teaching in WV before transferring to GCPS. While at GCPS, she also became a director for two different departments. When she retired from GCPS in 2007, she held the Assistant Superintendent position. Since retiring, she has served as an independent consultant for school systems.

Currently, Dr. McCartney serves as the Board Chair for Mountain Laurel Medical Center and as the Vice-Chair for the Garrett College Board of Trustees. “We are fortunate that Dr. McCartney will serve as GCPS Interim Superintendent for FY24 and help the Board navigate many difficult decisions ahead,” Mr. Woods said of the selection. “Her vast experience at every level of education will prove to be invaluable.”

McCartney is expected to begin the Interim Superintendent position beginning July 1, 2023, and continue through June 30, 2024.
