Increased Number of Flu Cases in Schools

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) has noticed an increase in the number of flu cases in our schools. We are urging parents to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of the flu.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms, please keep them home from school until they fully recover, at least 24 hours after their fever is gone, without using fever-reducing medicines.

To help prevent the flu, we recommend that students and staff members take the following steps:

  1. Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  2. Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of the tissue immediately.
  3. Avoid touching eyes, mouth, and nose.
  4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  5. Get vaccinated annually.

GCPS is committed to keeping our schools safe and healthy. We appreciate your cooperation in helping prevent the spread of the flu. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school nurse or your medical provider. More information may be obtained from the CDC website.
