GCPS Prepares for Southern Area Grade-Band Alignment, Announces Broad Ford Elementary 6th Grade Academy at Deep Creek Lake, MD

GCPS administrators met on 1/26/2024 to continue planning for the southern area grade-band alignment specific to 6th grade and Broad Ford Elementary. As a reminder, starting in the 2024-2025 school year, sixth graders from Yough Glades Elementary, Crellin Elementary, and Broad Ford Elementary will be located at the current Broad Ford Elementary School. GCPS is preparing to release more information about this transition in the coming weeks, including a program overview, daily schedule, and logistical information specific to the building. Below is a look at the Broad Ford Elementary 6th Grade Academy.

About the 6th Grade Academy

The academic instructional program will be departmentalized. Students will rotate between core English, Math, Science, and Social Studies content areas. Teachers will be able to specialize in a content area. Varying academic levels will be provided to meet student instructional needs (i.e., honors/general/merit). Students will also participate in a dedicated intervention block.

Aligned with Maryland Regulations, 6th-grade students will receive all core subject areas (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies) and a required fine art & Physical Education/Health class.

Students are encouraged to take as many different electives as possible. Students have eight blocks of time to fill. If a student is in the band that fills four of the eight blocks. PE/Health fills up another two blocks. They can then choose two additional electives. If students are not in a band, they are able to get more varying electives. Every student must have PE and health. Students may get an additional PE class if there is room in their schedule.

Electives Include:

  • Computer Science
  • Technology Education
  • Physical Education/Health
  • General Music
  • Band
  • Chorus
  • Theatre
  • Visual Art

Most electives will be offered on a 9-week (quarterly) rotation for students. Electives will follow an A day/B day rotation.
