The Rear Admiral Richard B. Schiff Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to honoring his commitment to helping others. The decision by Garrett Mentors to endow the scholarship means Admiral Schiff’s legacy will include ongoing support of Garrett College students.
“We wanted to ensure its perpetuity,” Laura Fike, executive director of Garrett Mentors, said of the scholarship. “Rick was a dedicated member and a past president of the Garrett Mentors organization. He was the first to step up when help was needed – not just for Garrett Mentors, but many other organizations as well.”
“We wanted to make sure this scholarship remained available to help future students and support Rick’s legacy,” added Frank Shap, a member of the Garrett Mentors Board of Directors.
The scholarship is held within the Garrett College Foundation (GCF). It is intended to support Garrett County residents attending Garrett College, with a preference given to former Garrett Mentors participants.
GCF Executive Director Cherie Krug said endowing of the scholarship “is a generous commitment that will continue to make access to higher education a reality for Garrett County residents.”
Schiff, who earned a law degree from George Washington University, served in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, eventually serving as a military judge and an advisor to senior naval operations commanders.
Garrett Mentors was founded in 2008 to create and support a cadre of mentors who could serve as positive adult role models.
