Race Results for the Garrett Co Composite Mountain Biking team at Fair Hill NRMA in Elkton, MD held on October 7-8, 2023

The Garrett County Coyotes traveled to the far northeast corner of Maryland to compete in the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL) race series on Oct. 8, 2023. The MICL Fair Hill race course had a balanced mixture of sweet singletrack trails, short technical sections, gravel road and a long grassy field climb! For the first time this season the middle school athletes raced on a shortened version of the normal race loop, which gave them the fastest course MICL has raced on in six seasons. Overall, riders had to draw on their fitness, focus, and grit to maintain the sprint-like pace set by the top racers in each division.

The Coyotes showed tremendous grit and determination as a team, finishing in 8th place in the field of 25 other teams. The entire Coyote Coaching staff and parents are all so proud of their efforts as the Coyotes placed six athletes on the podium (top 5), four in the top 10 and 2 in the top 20 positions in their respective division.

In the Girls 7th grade Division, Aspen Smith took 2nd place. She completed her two lap race (6 mile race) with a time 30 mins and 35 seconds. Her teammate Abby VanAntwerp finished 9th in 37:31. Ava Anderson racing in the Girls 8th grade div. completed 2 laps in 34:39 to capture 6th place.

High school girls raced 2 laps on the longer 3.7 race loop. Junior Ashlynn Anderson placed 3rd in the HS1 division with a dominating time of 45:54. Senior Ellie Hudnall finished in a strong 8th place in the HS2 div. in 55:47 and freshman Anna Buczynski grabbed the 5th place podium position in the Girls HS3 div. with a time of 52:19.

In the high school races, senior Nathan Aldridge finished an impressive 4th place in the Varsity Div. racing 15 miles in 1:06:19. In the Boys HS3 Div., Jason VanAntwerp pushed through 2 laps to finish the 8 mile race in 5th place, and on his heels, freshman teammates Cooper Haley and Andrew SanJulian were only a couple minutes behind Jason, as Haley finished 16th in 44:20 and SanJulian in 19th with the time of 44:55. The lone Coyote middle school boy, Cam Hudnall earned his first MICL podium by finishing in 5th place in the Boys 8th Grade Div. with a time of 27:33. for his 6 mile race.
